Cedar Key Getaway Information

Set amid the lovely town of Cedar Key, the state museum, once the home of St. Clair Whitman, is surrounded by beautiful sabal palms, live oaks, and saw palmettos. The museum is a wonderful compilation of 19th century Florida history. Depicted in the museum is the important fishing industry where trade extended beyond Cuba. Also exhibited is information about the fascinating link the area played during the Civil War. There is even information about Florida's early railroad era. One of the most enjoyable exhibits is the extensive shell collection. The museum is housed in St. Clair Whitman's former home, the gentleman who operated the first museum in Cedar Key. Mr. Whitman's varying collection of historic artifacts is on display Thursday through Monday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. The museum is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The museum and exhibits is wheelchair accessible. The grounds are open 365 days a year from 8 A.M. to sunset

Picnicking, viewing the museum exhibits, and touring the grounds are the recreations enjoyed at Cedar Key State Museum. Each fall a seafood festival is held in the town of Cedar Key.
