You've probably seen The Hut in Coastal Living magazine, back in 2004 and again in 2006. We are so proud to offer this lovely historic cottage to you! We've added modern comforts such as air conditioning, cable TV and so on into this 125 year old cottage
When the Wild West was at its wildest and Queen Victoria ruled far and wide, a wealthy man from the north bought a quiet corner of Florida coast as his humble holiday retreat. Simple both in name and design, The Hut would become the man?s family vacation spot for generations to come. Chosen for its natural surrounds and beachside serenity, this historic property promises your family just what Thomas Mellon enjoyed in the 1880s: ideal quality time, the good life, no distractions.
Few American families can boast an ancestral home dating to 1892, least of all one just steps from the beach in easy view of dolphins and whales and sea turtles. This makes The Hut - and the chance to call it your own for any length vacation - such an amazing treat. Mellon?s great-great-grandson, with a recall to shame any average family man, knows exactly which ancestor added what to The Hut. (Thank his grandparents for the fireplace, with the stones taken from the family beach).
This little away-from-it-all is cute and cosy. It?s a lovely place for even your mother-in-law should you rent The Hut in tandem with the larger Lodge next door. Three bedrooms comprise two queen beds and a kids? room with two twins. All guests share a bathroom and a galley kitchen is available - though you?ll likely gravitate to barbecues and beach picnics. Even the pickiest kids will love eating fish they helped to catch.
Both sunrise and sunset are on offer to those with stamina, with all range of options available in between morning coffee and evening gin and tonic. This is ambiance with a capital A. Kids will go crazy to see porpoises just off shore and the handsome landscaping is a haven for creative spirits - write your novel, try your hand at painting or just finish a well-thumbed book, topped off with a good nap. Even chores take on a new light while at The Hut. Laundry facilities are open-air, the washing machine is outside and clothes dry in no time on the line - ?going green? has never had a better view.
This isn?t the ?drag-them-to-Florida-and-count-down-to-Disney-World? vacation. Nor does it cater to 21st century kids hiding inside with video games. Instead, try endless board games by hurricane lamp and fresh seafood barbecued nightly. Books and beach walks - turn off Facebook and recall the things that count.
Built for a cool, comfortable and quiet existence - this home boasts original treats from way-back-when before air conditioning. Mellon?s descendants opted recently to leave the original pine wood floor as is, rather than deleting generations of scuffs and paint marks. Such floor-to-ceiling history is easy to revel in.
Recent updates provide modern convenience (air conditioning and cable TV), to be indulged or ignored as you fancy. Whether renting just The Hut or The Lodge as well, both properties make an other-worldly retreat where families gather to forget the stress of modern life. This year, vacation together and enjoy the good life. Where recent times have caused people to simplify and quieten - for the planet, our wallets and our sanity - The Hut is the happy answer.
Note: Summer Haven is constantly changing with nature. The SummerHaven river behind the house is largely a sand dune and can many times provide beach access. Due to Tropical Storm Faye erosion at the front, there is now an area of large boulders blocking the beach access points. Although you can walk in between these boulders to access the beach like the locals that live near by, the nearest easy beach access is approximately 1 mile north at Fort Mantanzas National Park. It has (free) paved parking and provides beach access via a meandering boardwalk through the park.
Bedding Configuration: 2 Queen, 2 Twin

Great cottage needs some attention.. A guest from Worth, IL recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in April, 2013 Overall we enjoyed our stay, great little cottage with a few imperfections, location was perfect,we would recommend with reservations.Property's general condition needs some attention, the whole cottage needs a good deep cleaning for our taste, furniture cushions although very cute need cleaning and restuffing, we were stuck indoors one day due to rainstorm and there was no comfortable chair for long seating. We had a few(3) water roaches come in for a visit but thank goodness it was towards the end of our stay, I understand this is common in Fl. but still not willing to share space with them.Neighboors had a really problems with bugs and rats so I'm hoping they dont walk over and find a new home at this location. Light fixtures in outlook and side porch by laundry didnt work. Plug that TV is plugged into should be corrected may cause a major problem one day.Whomever rented before us allowed their dog to lie on beds and furniture and this was NOT addresses by renters prior to leaving or cleaning service prior to our visit. Not pleased to find out after I had layed out our clothes on extra bed. I have 2 dogs and never allowed on furniture and if this is a problem bring extra sheets and put down so it doesn't cause a problem since it is a RENTAL. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Lawrence - I just received your feedback and wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey. The Hut: Our "RUST"ic Vacation Richard and Pauline C. from West Barnstable, MA does not recommend this property. Stayed for 7 days in February, 2013 Although we anticipated and appreciated the Hut's secluded and natural location, casual ambience and basic accommodations, we were disappointed with the home's maintenance, cleanliness, safety and comfort regarding daily living experiences.Examples include, the barbeque grill was too rusted to use, the deck was splintered with rusted nails protruding, the screen doors didn't fit securely and the screens were torn, the roof leaked in several spots over the course of a two day rain, and the bathtub was unsafe. Most of the outdoor chairs were broken, the table rusted and the indoor living room furniture was in poor condition and uncomfortable as well. We were unable to open the rotting windows to enjoy the breezes. It is also unfortunate that the dock leading to the sand and beach is not safe for use. Truly a disadvantage of renting this property in such close proximity to the beach. We enjoy and appreciate older homes, as we own one ourselves. We recognize that an older home may not have all modern conveniences, but do believe that the Hut should and could (with repairs, maintenance and attention) offer a safe and comfortable vacation for its renters, but it did not for us.Overall, we were disappointed with the property. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Richard - I just received your feedback and wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey. I apologize for the maintenance issues. This is not up to standards at all. I will email you directly on this. I have already contacted my property manager to get these fixed. Relaxing Getaway A guest from Alachua, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2012 Although I wish it had been closer to St Augustine (the 20 min drive is inconvenient if you hate to travel at night on roads without lights) the house's location was beautiful enough to make you not want to leave it anyway. Wonderful views, quiet and serene atmosphere. A few maintenance issues with the cottage itself (locks on doors are a little shoddy and only one of the exterior lights actually worked while we were there) were certainly supplanted by the charming interior and fabulous fireplace. Loved my stay and would gladly rent again any time. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Elizabeth - I just read your comments, and I want to thank you for the great input. At VRP we take our customers' feedback very seriously, and to show our thanks, I'd like to give you a coupon code good for 10% off your next rental. Great location - Great beach Jeanine S. from St Charles, IL recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2012 The hut was a great vacation for us. The location of the hut is amazing. The beach was never crowded - and very alive with sea and bird life. It is easiest to access the beach a couple of doors down - but it is easy to walk back to the rental if you need anything. We sat up on the overlook in the AM and you look right across the street to the ocean. Street is a dead-end and not busy either. The hut is a bit more 'rustic' than we thought but was very liveable - has good water pressure etc... Also has a shower outside so you can wash the sand off. Very quiet neighborhood. We had a great time. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Jeanine - Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us. We appreciate the feedback, and we hope that you will consider renting from us again next time. I'd like to offer you a coupon good for 10% off your next stay. cochroaches and dog hair Anita N. from Toronto, ON does not recommend this property. Stayed for 7 days in April, 2012 The location of the hut is spectacular. Unfortunately the overall property is run down and not terribly clean. For example the couch was broken and couldn't be sat on, and there were at least 4 different barbecues outside suggesting they were probably broken - I didn't know which was in working order. The side of the house where the outdoor washing machine is located is unkept and unpleasant. The inside of the hut was extremely dusty, particularly in the bedrooms. I don't think it has been properly cleaned. There were also tufts of dog hair everywhere. I was constantly picking up and disposing of dog hair. The dining table on the back porch could not be moved or used, as the top has become detached and is very rusty. the dock is in pieces (if we were using the correct one, it was hard to tell which was the assigned dock). The bathtub was not very appealing and should be replaced. The mosquito screens are not fitted to the doors and let in a lot of bugs. The biggest problem of course were the 2 inch cockroaches that were scurrying around. They even crawled up into our beds, forcing us to leave early. I would not recommend this property until it has been fixed up and insect free. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Alexander - Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us. I apologize for the insect issues and cleaning issues. This is not up to standards at all. I will email you a discount. I have already contacted my property manager to get these fixed. winter time stay at the hut A guest from Littleton, NC recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2011 Overall we enjoyed our stay.Even with 6 people and 3 dogs it was large enough.Night time temps went into the low 40's. The large propane heater did not work, The small elec. heaters gave off very little heat. The fireplace was nice but all the heat from that went up the chimney, so we froze at night. The wifi went out 3 days before we left, with a notice from comcast that the bill had not been paid. The beautiful inlet shown in the picture behind the house no longer exists due to a hurricane. It's just sand all the way across the inlet, and the pier is a jumbled mess. I'am sure it's probably very beautiful in the summer, but it's not set up for winter. We did enjoy the location but access to the beach is down a rock wall. The area overall is very beautiful. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Elaine - Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us. I apologize for the heater issues. Thanksgiving at the Beach A guest from Havana, Florida recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2011 The Hut is a wonderfully rustic cabin/cottage set between two other old cottages in Summer Haven. The grounds are natural rather than artifically maintained so we saw rabbits and gopher tortoises in their native surroundings in the yard along with painted daisies and palmetto palms. The coquina pathways, fireplace and pillars add a wonderful touch - I think it's against the law now to harvest coquina stone for construction! Beautiful charming place. As with most old houses, the bathroom could use a major update but everything worked fine and there was plenty of hot water! THE VERY BEST PLACE A guest from Battlecreek, MI recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in November, 2011 We had the best time while staying at THE HUT. The beach was amazing, as was the way the ocean pools as the tide changes. Such serenity. The house is so charming and very private. The look-out was so lovely to go up to and have our morning coffee. The staff came immediately when we called for a little more cleaning upon our arrival, and they were so nice. The couple of issues we had were that they only supplied two washcloths (we had to go buy more). Plenty of towels though! The grill did not work (we found out after we purchased food for grilling), nor did the gas heater(only was really cold one night, however). The roof leaked badly in a couple of places during a heavy rain one morning(it needs to be repaired to stop any more damage). We still loved the historic charm and would come back again. I hope someday that the river can flow behind the house again, but if it does not, it is still fantastic. What a great place to visit prior to our long Michigan winter ahead. Hope to come back soon! I apologize for the maintenance issues. I have already contacted my property manager to get these fixed. You and your family are welcome back any time. |

Such an adorable cottage!! A guest from Atlanta, Georgia recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2011 When we first arrived at the 'Hut' we were somewhat disappointed that we were so far away from Historic St. Augustine (20+ minutes), but we quickly fell in love with the house and location. We saw shooting stars at night and dolphins in the morning while sitting on the roof-deck, and enjoyed our multiple walks on the beach everyday. If you like seashells this is a great spot! The beach is very accessible during low-tide. I do want to be clear, if you want the Four Seasons, this is not it. But we wanted a charming house with character, and we got it and more. My only complaint is there were no hangers for our clothes, it would have been nice to be able to hang up everything we had packed that had gotten wrinkled on the trip. Overall, we LOVED the Hut, and will definitely be returning! The Hut Charlene K. from Gainesville, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in September, 2011 We had some difficulties getting into the house. Either the code was incorrect or the lock box was stuck. The WIFI was not working but, added on Saturday. It rained on Sunday and there were two rather large leaks in the roof--I left a pan with a towel under each of the two locations. Relaxing stay At St Augustine A guest from Quitman, Georgia recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2011 Great location. Access to beach it not what picture shows because of a huge storm but you can walk to end of road(100ft) or walk out over the dock where the river used to be. Our dog loved huge area of sand there. Top deck was awesome. GREAT OLD FASHIONED BEACH EXPERIENCE Marianne J. from Signal Moutain, TN recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in June, 2011 I've never enjoyed a beach vacation more-The Hut is secluded, private with a beautiful beach within a few steps! It's been a long time since I've stayed at a beach house that truly has a personality and a history. Staying at the HUT offered me and my daughter a unique beach vacation with a quaintness that is hard to beat! The fact that there are no stainless steel appliances does not make any difference. It has everything you need to enjoy a real beach vacation! It's rustic but it's really fun! We plan to return. THE HUT..MARCH 2011 Gary H. from Brookhaven, NY recommends this property. Stayed for 28 days in March, 2011 LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.. COULD NOT ASK FOR A BETTER SPOT ON THE BEACH!THE SUMMER HAVEN AREA IS SO SWEET AND BEACHES ARE FANTASTIC.THE HUT ITSELF NEEDS ALOT OF ATTENTION. I KNOW IT IS VERY OLD AND THAT IS CERTAINLY PART OF THE ALLURE BUT CERTAIN SIMPLE ITEMS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. HOLES IN SCREENING SHOULD BE REPAIRED, I FIXED A FEW MYSELF. WINDOW AC UNITS DO NOT WORK AND THE'CENTRAL' ONE IN LIVING AREA CANNOT HANDLE THE LOAD.LUCKILY DURING MY STAY AC WAS ONLY NEEDED ONE TIME.USUALLY A WONDERFUL BREEZE BLOWS THROUGH THE HOUSE. ONLY 2 BURNERS WORK ON THE STOVE.WHILE THE FURNITURE IS QUAINT AND ADDS TO THE ATMOSPHERE, IT IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE FOR AN EXTENDED STAY.THERE WERE SEVERAL SERIOUS ROOF LEAKS DURING HARD RAINS.OUTDOOR FURNITURE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND FALLING APART.THE WATERWAY BEHIND THE PROPERTY IS GONE BUT THAT ACTUALLY MAKES BEACH ACCESS EASIER.WHILE THIS MAY SOUND LIKE A SOMEWHAT NEGATIVE REVIEW, IT REALLY IS NOT. JUST A LITTLE TLC WOULD GO A LONG WAY IN MAKING THIS PLACE A BEACH PARADISE. IN FACT I HAVE RESERVED IT FOR NEXT YEAR! Ramshackle romance A guest from Decatur, GA does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in March, 2011 Pros: the cottage certainly had lots of charm. The rooftop patio is lovely. The team were very professional, organized and excellent to deal with.Cons: well, let's see... there were plenty of those, I'm afraid. The cottage had no view - there was heavy plastic over all the windows. Some inside the building, some outside. Winterizing still in effect, I guess. There were doors to the outside that were sealed shut with masking tape. There was encrusted bird poop on a shelf in the bathroom. (It makes me wonder: was the shelf outside at some point, or was the bird inside?) Also, it's a major stretch to call the kitchen 'well appointed' ? it was bare bones at best (I don't know if it contains pot holders, for example). It feels like this cottage needs a major infusion of TLC. It's held together with bailing wire and duct tape at this point. Overall, it felt like a poor value for what we paid. Our stay was comfortable enough, but I would not recommend this particular property. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Carissa - I just received your feedback and wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey. I apologize for the maintenance issues. Winter is over and the plastic needs to be taken down. I sincerely apologize. I have already contracted my property manager to get these fixed. Ups and Downs Dennis B. from Orangeville, Ontario recommends this property. Stayed for 14 days in December, 2010 We picked this cottage because of it's oldness and history, so we expected an older place. When we arrived there was no propane to heat the place, if the weather is cold you NEED one or even two heating sources. The grills that were supposed to be present was actually one grill that was unusable.Other than that, a great location! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to visit when the temperature is higher. Cheryl B. from Alpharetta, Georgia does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 7 days in December, 2010 The cottage was very charming. However, our stay was just plain uncomfortable. When we arrived the propane heater wasn't working at all. The gas company rep did arrive in about an hour. But, he said that if we had been able to get the heater started, it would have been really bad, since there was a crack in the gas line. He also said that the tank definitely needs to be replaced. You would think that the heater would be inspected prior to guests arriving in winter. Also, one heater isn't enough. The dining room was warm, but the bedrooms were freezing. My brother, who lives in Michigan, said Monday was the coldest night of his life. On Tuesday, we left for Pt. St. Lucie to thaw out for a night. The windows are way beyond drafty. The wind was howling through the windows so bad, we had to buy plastic and tape it to all of the windows. I've attached a picture of the plastic blowing. Imagine that at 20 degrees on your neck. I understand I was unlucky enough to rent during the coldest week of the year, but if you're going to rent this place in the winter, you really need to seal or replace the windows and provide additional heaters. We were grateful for the fireplace. That saved us. We went through over a dozen bags of wood. The stove also needs some repair. There's only one small burner in the back that worked consistently. And the bath mats were really nasty looking. This place would be great in the spring or fall, but I would not recommend it to anyone in winter. I apologize for the heating maintenance issues. I have already contracted my property manager to work with the owner to get these fixed. You and your family are welcome back any time. |

The Hut 2010 A guest from Smyrna, TN recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2010 The toilet did not flush over half the time. We had 3 people staying their and after 2 flushes it would back up and we would have to plunge. Obviously the owners know it does this because they have a note that when it backs up to take the plunger and plunge vigirously. This did not work, it only splashed toilet water around. Also the private Doc is old and very dangerous and if you have kids you need to scratch that off your list. The washer and dryer did not work. Other than these 3 things I did enjoy the location, and oldness of the hut, but I do not enjoy having to deal with old amenities, these could be upgraded for the price that you pay to stay at the Hut.Thanks, Shane Gambill Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Jennifer - I just received your feedback and wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey. A real feeling for the history of old Florida. After the Nor'easter two years ago, the river is different each year, and every day during our stay. We'll be back again next year. The Hut, Summer Haven, FL Philip E. from Montmorenci, SC recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in June, 2010 The Hut was generally in reasonable physical shape considering its 130+-year age. One window AC unit needs replacement because it cools very little, and the living, dining, and kitchen areas are uncomfortable during the day. Glass kitchen door needs insulation around the glass edges. Property Manager Response: Response from Vacation Rental Pros Hi Philip - I just received your feedback and wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey. I appreciate the feedback on the AC issue and door and will contact our maintenance department. It is our goal to provide a wonderful vacation experience. Stayed for 6 days in March, 2010 If you are looking for historic charm and glorious views rather than lux amenities, The Hut is the place for you.
