Next time you visit St. Augustine, don?t just sightsee ? stay in a piece of history! St. Francis Cottage, a darling Victorian just made for 2, sits right off Cordova Street, kitty-corner to Maria Sanchez Lake. It?s a period piece with modern comforts!
St. Francis Cottage sits on the corner, a primrose-yellow house with a big chimney. A brick pathway leads to the door, opening into a light and lovely sitting room. You?ll immediately notice the wide-plank hardwood floor, beautifully restored to bring out the red tones in the wood, and the handsome fireplace with small hearth. (Everything was on a smaller scale in the 19th century!) It?s easy to imagine this room heated by candle-light and a crackling fire.
Beautiful built-ins and vintage furnishings contribute to the period feel of St. Francis Cottage. From the fainting couch to the scrollwork in the bookshelves, the details are exquisite. And luckily, the Victorian look has been modified with contemporary improvements such as soft recessed lighting and central air-conditioning. It?s the perfect blend of the picturesque and the practical!
Just beyond the sitting room is the dining nook, tucked into a light-filled corner of the house. A round table for 2 invites you to enjoy your meal while gazing out of the long windows and admiring the tricornered curio cabinet.
The kitchen at St. Francis Cottage is galley-style, with open wooden shelves and full-size appliances (though the fridg will seem a little small by today?s gigantic standards!). You will find it fully stocked with dishes, utensils, glasses, and cookware, so feel free to load up on groceries and do a little home cooking. St. Augustine?s wonderful restaurants and cafes are tempting, but there?s nothing like a pleasant meal at home!
And since you?re cooking, you might want to dine al fresco on our patio. Surrounded by lush greenery, our little brick-pavement bistro table and lounge furniture is just right for a meal, snack, or long lazy afternoon with a book and earphones! It?s also great for birdwatching ? in fact, if you are interested in birds, Maria Sanchez Lake is practically across the street, and a fabulous place to see egrets, ibis, and other fascinating waterfowl.
When it?s time to retire for the night, you?ll find the bedroom at St. Francis Cottage cozy and snug. There?s a comfortable double bed in here, along with a small TV just in case you want to let the 21st Century into your Victorian reverie.
The bathroom in our cottage has a freestanding tub equipped for showers as well as baths, vintage black-and-white tile, and simple white fittings. All of the towels you need are waiting for you here, along with fresh linens for the bed. Pack light; a visit to St. Francis Cottage is carefree and easy!
The location of this cottage could not be better. It?s just down the street from the Gonzales-Alvarez House, the oldest house in America. The Matanzas Inlet is just a few minutes? stroll away, and the Lightner Museum is around the corner. The trolley stops within a block or two, and Flagler College is nearby. In other words, you?re in the heart of the Old City, with all the advantages of a private home plus the convenience of the perfect location!
Come stay at St. Francis Cottage next time you?re in St. Augustine. You?ll feel the rich history of this area come alive in our quaint, comfy, wonderfully convenient house. There?s no better way to see the sights and experience the authentic flavor of America?s oldest city!
