Linked by a garden door, Mahatma is the mirror image in design, and the opposite in colour, of its virgin-white sister, .

The villa reveals reflective surfaces throughout, literally from the ground up; the swimming pool, fish ponds, mirrored walls, tinted windows and the highly-polished black concrete floors all conspire and illude to double the space, and yet the space that actually exists is already huge.

With a main building flanked by a pair of two-storey wings, and two standalone guest suites on the far side of the garden, Mahatma’s presence is replicated in the still waters of its 18m swimming pool along with an abundance of relaxation areas, both social and private. Four out of the five bedrooms have private outdoor sitting areas while more communal seating is arranged in front of a 49-inch flat-screen, satellite channel TV downstairs . Two dining areas top it all off with a formal table for ten and a low slung Japanese-style dining experience for six.

Standing as a dominant feature at the far end of the garden – and mimicking the impressive volcanic-rock water wall that greets guests upon arrival at the villa – is a vertical rock garden encrusted with moss and ferns, reminiscent of a mature riverbank. Directly beneath this, contemporary comfort meets nature with an alfresco sitting area that overlooks the pool and provides a day camp for all.

A full-time cook is on hand to prepare local and Western dishes from a suggestion menu. The housekeeping team will do the provisioning and keep receipts for guest reference.

Mahatma and <a href=" can be rented together, presenting accommodation for up to 18 people: perfect for weddings and other special events. In brooding partnership with its neighbouring ‘bride’ in white (which is the more appropriate shade for nuptials after all), Mahatma’s cool black suit is the ideal outfit for nocturnal groover-and-shaker happenings.
