Lataliana means ‘tall trees’ in Sanskrit, and this exciting five-bedroom property celebrates the presence and shade of majestic figs, a 30-year-old baobab ‘upside down tree’, and several spectacular flame trees that drop their fiery scarlet petals like hot coals.

In common with the trees that dot the gardens, this central Seminyak villa is designed as a living, breathing, organic whole. From the ornately-carved joglo wedding pavilion to the bright gold, glass Celtic spiral window, Lataliana I is a well-planned architectural delight, a tasteful and timeless work of beauty. In their quest for furnishings, the owners thought well outside the square by recycling the timbers of a century-old, wooden, Indonesian sailing ship. The well-weathered stories ingrained within the ship’s deck, prow, stern, bulkheads and rum barrels have been transformed into couches, beds, chairs, tables, vanity units and cabinets, following the natural curves of the wood. These beauties are complemented by twisted door handles, fashioned from namesake liana Tarzan vines.

Water features large at Lataliana I with fish ponds and a 25m free-form swimming pool, with shallow shelves and an old mill stone that takes centre stage with its fountain focal point. At night, blue LEDs light up the water with subtlety and invitation.

The owners are experienced hoteliers so they know the business inside out. A full complement of professional staff includes a five-star kitchen team that turns out food fit for a king from a priced villa menu, and a crew of personal butlers, who underwent training at Bali’s prestigious Four Seasons Resort.
