Historical Notes about Hotel Sauerlacher Post – former royal ‘Posthalterei’
The monastery Tegernsee, one of the oldest and most important in Bavaria, founded in the 8th century, was acquired by the Bavarian monarch in March 1817.
Only one year later, King Max. I. Josef transferred his summer residence into the newly purchased castle and held court in Tegernsee.
The königliche Oberstallmeister Freiherr von Kessling, responsible for the royal stables, calculated that the entire trip from Munich to Tegernsee would require 70 horses to be kept available by the townships along the way –not a satisfying situation in the long term.
Thus, the High Post of the Royal Bavarian Government announced on July 31, 1822, that Posthaltereien had to be established in Tegernsee and in Sauerlach to serve the highest court during ist summer residence in Tegernsee.
At that time, a traveler on the way from Munich to Tegernsee was on the road fort wo days, with an overnight stay in Sauerlach.
Starting already in 1825, there was a daily connection by express coach, serving the route Munich-Tegernsee-Bad Kreuth during the bathing season in Bad Kreuth.
Posthaltung meant a stable of horses kept for the postal administration’s employees by a private entrepreneur, so that they could change horses while on the road to transport letters, people or small packages.
During the summer time, due tot he king’s court being held in Tegernsee and to visit the spa facilities in Bad Kreuth, renowned people regularly passed through Sauerlach.
Special Guests of the House:
In 1838, Her Majesty Alexandra Feodorowna, Queen of Russia, accompanied by Alexandra Nicolajewna, Grand Duchess and Royal Highness, stayed in Sauerlach while on their way to Bad Kreuth. On August 12, they were followed by His Majesty Nicolaus I. Pawlowitsch, Emperor of Russia, from the far-away St. Petersburg.
During the heyday of the post office in Sauerlach, the stables holding nearly 70 horses were almost too small; every night, the spacious guest’s room was prepared as sleeping quarter for the coachmen by putting in straw; at four in the morning, the horses were hitched up.
On the Sunday of the church blessing in October 1866, the old post burnt down, but was rebuilt in the same year.
Between 1894 and his move to the Gaistal at the Wetterstein in 1897, Ludwig Ganghofer also stopped at the royal ‘Posthalterei’ which became the "Hotel Sauerlacher Post". With millions of printed copies, many film and play adaptations of his works, Ludwig Ganghofer was one of the most successful German authors of the last century.
The End of the Era of Post Coaches:
The town’s first bakery was operated in the post office, until the latter’s head got into altercations with the master baker, who then opened his own store.
Lorenz Bruckner, still remembered by old inhabitants of Sauerlach, was the post officer and, in the time before WWI, journeyed along the scenic route from Schliersee to Bayrischzell. His house at Hofoldinger Straße Nr. 2 still stands.
There is also talk of a post officer who made the route from Hofolding to Faistenhaar and, proudly sitting atop his coach

In 1838, Her Majesty Alexandra Feodorowna, Queen of Russia, accompanied by Alexandra Nicolajewna, Grand Duchess and Royal Highness, stayed in Sauerlach while on their way to Bad Kreuth. On August 12, they were followed by His Majesty Nicolaus I. Pawlowitsch, Emperor of Russia, from the far-away St. Petersburg.
During the heyday of the post office in Sauerlach, the stables holding nearly 70 horses were almost too small; every night, the spacious guest’s room was prepared as sleeping quarter for the coachmen by putting in straw; at four in the morning, the horses were hitched up.
On the Sunday of the church blessing in October 1866, the old post burnt down, but was rebuilt in the same year.
Between 1894 and his move to the Gaistal at the Wetterstein in 1897, Ludwig Ganghofer also stopped at the royal ‘Posthalterei’ which became the "Hotel Sauerlacher Post". With millions of printed copies, many film and play adaptations of his works, Ludwig Ganghofer was one of the most successful German authors of the last century.
The End of the Era of Post Coaches:
The town’s first bakery was operated in the post office, until the latter’s head got into altercations with the master baker, who then opened his own store.
Lorenz Bruckner, still remembered by old inhabitants of Sauerlach, was the post officer and, in the time before WWI, journeyed along the scenic route from Schliersee to Bayrischzell. His house at Hofoldinger Straße Nr. 2 still stands.
There is also talk of a post officer who made the route from Hofolding to Faistenhaar and, proudly sitting atop his coach
