The location (overlooking a quiet Rockaway Beach) is exceptional, and the house itself was decked out with everything we needed.Big kitchen with everything you'll need and a big living room. There is also a nice den with a foosball table and TV if people want to watch movies but not disturb people in the main room.Highly recommended! My only concern is that the basement bedroom does not have any windows and the door to the garage is there but locked so no second possible exit. I would not hesitate to rent this house again, just don't use that bedroom. The loft was perfect, full of beds and very open. They slept on couches instead. With only one bathroom on the ground floor it seemed like all 14 of us were trying to share it. Also the thermostats would not adjust to change the temperature so we had to open and close the kitchen window to let air in, and the basement just stayed cold. Several items were broken, the front TV (No cable and the DVD player appeared broken), the stove in the kitchen was broken (we had a very difficult time getting all burners to work-they either wouldn't come on or would and then would stop. It took forever to boil a pot of water for the corn.) The downstairs also smelled like mildew. The washing machine came out from the wall every time we used it and we were afraid it was going to unplug itself or pull things out of the wall. Felt like the furniture needed updating and was washed out. Oh, and the DSL cord in the bedroom was broken and so we could not use the DSL line for internet. Everything else was fine. We were just disappointed because several of the main things we needed to use were broken. At $400 a night, we just expected more. We will not be staying at castaway again. Ocean front homes often have musty smells in the basement but it is not mold. We will pass on your suggestion for new furniture to the homeowner.
