More travel info about Kuhlungsborn: Located less than 20 miles from the much larger city of Rostock, Kuehlungsborn is a seaside resort on the Baltic Sea. It is actually the largest seaside town in Mecklenburg and one of the oldest seaside resorts established in Germany, dating from the 1860s. To help preserve Kuehlungsborn's small-town feel, no buildings can be built to be taller than the town's tallest tree. Although it is clear that the town's greatest attraction is its beach, there is an array of cultural sites that may draw you away from the sand. The historic narrow-gauge Molli steam railway was built in 1886, and today it is very popular with tourists who wish to see the area by rail. St. John's Church, which was begun in the 1200s, will satisfy your taste for medieval church architecture. If you are more interested in the Cold War era than the Middle Ages, check out the Baltic Sea watchtower, which was used by the East Germans to patrol escapes made via the water. Now back to the beach... The Kuehlungsborn Pier runs 200 yards out into the Baltic and is worth a stroll, as is the beach promenade, which is 100 yards wide at this point on the coast. Once you have had your fill of sun and sand, indulge in a very different culture by taking a day trip to either Rostock (20 miles) or Wismar (25 miles).
