YES THE WHALES ARE THIS CLOSE! Mele Kohola means "Singing Whale" in Hawaiian and they will entertain you day and night (in season, of course, December-March). Even when the whales are not in season, you'll enjoy the unobstructed bi-coastal views with waves crashing against the sea wall. There is a view from almost every room in the house including the front and back lanais. The ocean in front of Mele Kohola is very deep and the coastline is shaped in a gentle cove tempting the whales and dolphins to play very close to shore.

ONCE INSIDE, YOU WILL SEE THE PRIDE AND CARE taken in the classy, upscale, tropical decor, with lots of room for a large family but cozy enough for a romantic getaway. Guests love the oversized chaise lounge and extra-high king bed. If you must work, there is an office provided for you with a roomy desk and high-speed Internet. The house is located directly on the ocean in the popular neighborhood of Hawaiian Paradise Park, about 15 miles south of Hilo.

BEAUTIFUL FURNISHINGS AND ARTISTIC AREA RUGS on parquet wood floors provide style and comfort during your stay. The main part of the house is on the second floor with two bedrooms, two baths, and the office. The large back lanai (deck) has an outdoor table and barbecue, and there are two front lanais, one off the living area and one off the master bedroom. The first floor has a large open room with living, dining, and kitchenette areas. That level also has a bedroom with a large king bed. The home comes fully equipped with everything you need in the kitchen, and it has a satellite TV, DVD/CD, and washer/dryer.

OUT FRONT IS AN OCEANFRONT JACUZZI SPA with views along the coastline -- dramatic waves crashing against the cliffs with a view that constantly changes. As an extra bonus, you can start your morning with a beautiful sunrise on the horizon. Yes, this is paradise!

THIS ENTRY FROM THE MELE KOHOLA GUESTBOOK was so moving we thought it belonged here rather than on our Testimonials page:

_
We arrived at night, the only indication we were on the ocean was the sound of waves breaking against rocks. The air is so clean it feels like breathing in life. The stars were speckled across the sky in surreal abundance. Brilliant sky, rumbling surf, invigorating air, all that was missing was vision.
That was left for sunrise this morning, where I saw just how close we were to the ocean. We watched the dark waves in the prelight of dawn, throwing themselves against the black lava cliffs, spraying upwards, not so much an attack as a powerful display. Walking across the twisted, hardened lava, moss fighting for ground, passing the odd, jurassic park plant, hearing the waves collide into the cliffs, I felt a sense of time's expansiveness, of how small this moment was in the universe's scheme, of the formation of ground and earth and dirt and plants, a patient progression, until hundreds or thousands of years from now nothing will resemble what I now walk on, in this tiny moment of existence in this speck over the billions of years. Nature in its rawest form.
As it grew lighter, the darkness of the water lightened into the brilliant blues and turquoise I am watching right now, waves silvered by the sun. I am feeling contemplative about life and this world. This place makes you reconsider. It instills peace and restlessness in equal measure.
Leah GalloNew London, PennsylvaniaP.S. The house is wonderful too!_

Year-round rate range is $115 - $355 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Cleaning fee ranges from $125 to $180, also depending upon party size.

Awesome Location and Very Clean Home
Meagan S. from Honolulu, HI recommends this property.

Had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Mele Kohola with my mom. The house was EXTREMELY clean and very nicely decorated. The lanai was the favorite part of the house, we saw whales everyday! Would definitely recommend to others.

Amy H. from Pekin, IN recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in November, 2013
We stayed @ Mele Kohola from 11/29-12/6/13. The overall stay was very nice. Very easy to relax while listening to the waves crash outside the house. The house was clean and everything worked for the most part, except the alarm-it kept beeping in middle of the night if you left a window open which without a/c the house can get stuffy all closed up. The house was in good proximity to Hilo, only took about 15 minutes to town and all the local beaches, shopping & waterfalls. We took trips to the Kona side as well and now that the saddle road has been updated & repaved the trip was only about an hour & 1/2. Wiapio Valley was a nice drive and the Volcanoes & South Point & Green Sand Beach was worth the trip as well. The only down side to the house was the fact that the most comfortable bed in the house is in the basement in a bedroom that does not have a ceiling fan (and the frogs are a bit annoying). Put a ceiling fan in that bedroom and this house would have nothing to complain about in my books. Thanks for a very pleasant stay.

Sept 13 vacation at Mele Kohola
A guest from Puyallup, WA recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in September, 2013
We stayed 3 nights at Mele Kohola, using the home as a base of operations to see the East side of the Big Island. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location of the home is fantastic, and we really enjoyed mornings and evenings on the lanai watching and listening to the surf. The house got pretty warm during the day, but we were generally gone then, and in the evenings we were able to open the windows and let the wonderful sea breeze cool the house so we were comfortable for sleeping. We would certainly recommend the home to anyone wanting to explore the Hilo area. The experience would be enhanced if the home had a propane grill and some grilling tools. And though the kitchen was adequate, some repairs/upgrading would make the home even better.

This was an amazing water view, saw dolphins swimming by one morning.Very nice kitchen. Spare bedroom upstairs beds are extremely noisy for some reason. A little off the beaten path, but worth it. It was great location for Volcanoes National park. Birds are certainly vocal at night but nothing you can do about that. A chaise lounge on front lanai would be nice. Thank you again.

All the information sent, and available at the house, made everything run smoothly! We plan on coming back, and wouldn't hesitate to use this vacation rental company again. Huge house, probably too big for two people! Pros, awesome location, you'll go to sleep with waves crashing against the rocks which drowns out the annoying Coqui frogs, and wake to amazing sun rises. Spa is great after a long hike, double garage, washing machine, dryer, WiFi. Cons, kitchen is old and will get invaded by ants if you're not careful. You won?t find a usable knife so BYO, they're all rusted. Musty smell in the house too. A new knife block and air freshener and it would be 5/5.

This property was very nice. The furniture was in great condition and it was also very clean. The views were absolutely incredible and sunrise every morning was beautiful. We were also impressed that we were provided with drinking water and basic would have been nice if it was included in the description that the tap water was non-potable. We would not stay here again however, for only 2 reasons. The upstairs queen bed was terribly hard and uncomfortable (we tossed and turned all night) and we could not sleep in the downstairs king as the entire bottom floor had a very bad smell.

Property Manager Response:
Response from Aloha Coast Realty, LLC/Hawaii Holiday Vac. Rentals
Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the location. Just to clarify, the water IS potable, we just know that some guests are wary of catchment system water. We do insure that the quaity of the tap water IS drinkable. The bottles of water are for your comfort. We're sorry about the bed and smell issues. We do have our 24hr guarantee and would have happily re-located you. Not every bed works for every body and we have not had any other complaints about this one. Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

A guest from Langley, BC recommends this property.
Stayed for 10 days in November, 2011
Hi the site is lovely and the outside had been painted. The inside was a little tired up stairs. I left a list of suggested repairs like a railing for the top stairs the is continuous for us older people, a fan in main bathroom that works and more comfortable seating outside the front of the house for water watching. Downstairs was in better condition. The lovely lounge chair upstairs is fading in comfort and the blinds in the bedrooms were missing a few slats. Other than that it is a lovely house and the neighbours were very friendly. I would have wished for better weather but we got to see a different side to Hawaii than the rich resorts so that was great.

Gretchen M. from Atlanta, GA recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in October, 2011
During our late October five night visit to Mele Kohola we watched for whales as did the neighbors who came and sat on the lava to peer out to sea. Though we saw no whales, rainbows wide, narrow, full arc, and segments surprised us all times of day and stars, planets, and the moon at night. You'll be lulled to sleep in the master BR as waves break on the clifts--reminded us of childhood nights at the beach. Our granddaughter urged us into the spa before breakfast! The location was close enough to get to Hilo quickly for Imiloa Astronomy Center's Halloween party for kids. Also ten minutes to Hawaii's best open air market--Makuu on Sundays. Since we've been to the island six times, Mele Kohola gave us a chance to stay right on the coast which we hadn't done before. We even got on good terms with he that my sister named "Rooster Cogburn"! He has a haren and several minor male underlings to whom he crows, cocks, and coos. Mahalo for a splendid vacation!

Overall, the place was wonderful. There were some minor maintenance issues when we arrived that we made known to the property company when we left (we didn't want to wait around for a handy man or have our vacation interrupted by one). If you love the sound of crashing ocean and frogs, this place is for you! The sunrises are beautiful and it's nice that the home has 2 levels so people can have their own space. It is a little far removed from anyone or anything, but mostly that was a plus. I would recommend this home.

Great location
Nancy G. from Sequim, WA recommends this property.
Stayed for 13 days in March, 2011
The rental was supplied with almost everything we needed -- including umbrellas and binoculars. We did see whales in the bay two days of our stay. Being on the ocean (even during a tsunami evacuation) was beautiful. The rental agent called to warn us of the tsunami warnings. The location was rural but near enough to Hilo, Pahoa and Volcanoes National Park for day trips. Another plus was the high speed internet line which allowed us to contact family after returning from tsunami evacuation. We had been asked by government not to use phones during evacuation to keep lines open for emergency personnel. There were a few things that need to be addressed to make stays more pleasant for guests. One of the features listed for the rental was a hot tub, which we looked forward to using. However, the cover was very heavy (water-logged, which occurs with covers)and deteriorated. It was difficult and awkward to remove the cover, even for two people working at it. Since covers on hot tubs become water-logged over time, most people have a cover lift (hinged metal bar) to make cover removal easy. We only used the hot tub twice in a two week stay. Also, the screens on the sliding doors did not slide easily, but we finally got them to work more easily by spraying the sliding track with WD40. We would suggest housekeeper spray them prior to each guests stay. It would also be nice to have either a dust mop or broom in the house to use for sweeping the floor, so a vacuum did not have to be used. The check-out info posted on the refrigerator listed an item about leaving the key and remote for the gate on the kitchen counter. Those were not there when we arrived and I told the rental agent that the item needs to be deleted from the check-out instructions. We enjoyed our two weeks at Mele Kohola which were restful and relaxing. We discovered that the area on Beach Rd (one road uphill from house) was a great place for walking, fishing and had public area w

The road to the property is wavy, but so worth it! I would love to live in this house full-time. We will absolutely be back as much as possible! Don't hesitate on this property. It has easy access to Hilo, the Volcano and the Macadamia Nut Factory. The guest book at the house is a good read. The croquis and roosters just added to the entire experience. A guest from Keaau, HI recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in February, 2011
We really enjoyed our weekend at Mele Kohala. We went there to whale watch from the upstairs lanai and we were not disappointed. The house is very close to the water and we could easily watch the whales with the naked eye.The house inside is beautifully decorated and the furnishing are upscale. I was happy to see the kitchen stocked with spices, oils, etc. which made meal preparation much easier. I have only 2 recommendations. The kitchen could use a coffee grinder. We brought whole bean coffee to the house and any dedicated coffee drinker will tell you, the ground stuff just won't cut it. We were also told that there are plans for a TV to be installed upstairs. I would prefer to have the TV there since it was cumbersome to take food/dishes downstairs while we watched the Super Bowl.We were very impressed with how the property management staff handled the one problem we had while staying there. The hot tub wasn't working so we called the contact number we were given. They took the info and called us back within an hour to let us know that they were sorry but the part the hot tub needed was not available so it could not be fixed. They could easily have ignored the call since it came in on a Saturday afternoon. When I contacted them after checkout and shared my disappointment since the hot tub was one of the reasons we had chosen to stay there, they made an accomodation which was more than fair.My husband and I will plan on staying there next year during whale watching season. I recommend Mele Kohala without hesitation.

Nothing can compare to sitting on the lava in front of the house at sunrise with your coffee, or sunset with your wine, and watching the whales do what whales do.

The location and condition of this unit was a pleasant surprise. Stocked well with minimum essentials and amenities as well as unused items from previous guests. We moved from another rental in Kapoha to be closer to family. The Management and cleaning staff could not have been nicer allowing us to move some items into the garage before check in time.Only suggestion, although minor, would be to add a second TV.Would definitely stay here a again.

The only issue we had with the location was that we were there with 2 kids so anywhere we wanted to go added like nearly 45 min (round trip) to the drive. But the location itself was beautiful and we loved hearing the waves and frogs singing at night.

First sight of the ocean view from Mele Kohola's lanai stole our breath away. After our first sunrise, we woke up every morning without an alarm, well-ahead of the event to catch the warm colors of twilight through the ever-changing cloud formations. The mini-rainshowers every night gave new meaning to a new, fresh day. While not secluded, the location seemed very private because the ocean is such a presence here. The house itself was furnished nicely and was very clean.

Ocean front with no obstructed view of the ocean. The house is very clean and neat. Price is very reasonable. We had a great time staying in the house for 5 nights. My kids will remember the night bird chirping for the rest of their life. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone who come to me for recommendations. You can't swim because it is not on the beach though. So it is not for someone who is looking for a beach front property.

Just wanted to say that the house was really good. Only problem is that we all got very sick after being there 2 days. 3 of us got respiratory infections, 4 of us got coughs, 1 of us got an eye infection, all of us got really bad sore throats. We know it was something in the house, because 2 of our friends came over to visit one day, and they are both now sick with the same symptoms. It's been 1 week since we all got back, and we're still sick. You may want to check to see if your house has black mold. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we will not be back.

Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals
We take all feedback and concerns over our properties seriously and the guests wrote us after they left regarding this. While we are sympathetic that they were ill, they had told us they has all flown in from different places (they were a large party) and since we have had no other complaints of this nature, including the current guest, our conclusion was that they brought something in from one of the flights, and this is not a problem with the house.

We loved the house and the location for the things we had planned! Nothing like being right on the water. The internet pictures of the house were very accurate. We got a few ants, but other than that it was perfect! Didn't get to see any whales, but we had a turkey in the front yard the day we left, who would've thought.

We didn't see any whales but we certainly enjoyed looking for them. Breakfast on the lanai overlooking the ocean was one of the highlights of the day. The house was close enough to all the east side attractions but still very private. If I'm ever back in Hawaii I'd try to stay in Mele Kohola again.

The lanai views were stunning, spent much time there. The lay out was great for one large or two small families, or an extra married couple. Loved the ambiance and furnishings. We were inspired to cook but the knives were almost useless unfortunately. Due to the catchment system we were a little unclear as to the water safety, get clarity from the managers, its better/safer than the registration packet suggests. Strong positive vibe here. Would definitely return!

The home is in a beautiful location, right on the water with breathtaking views! It's roomy and was large enough for a 7-member adult family to spread out and not be cramped. The humidity is high there, so be prepared for things to feel damp! There is a rooster next-door who will be sure to wake you up EARLY every morning, but he can be drowned out by box fans. The house isn't air-conditioned but the ocean breezes make it very comfortable. The last 3 miles of the road to the house is VERY bumpy and caused a few of the family members to get car-sick, but we got used to it by the end of our stay. The property manager responded immediately to our only problem with the alarm system. He even provided a portable crib for out 2-year-old. Communication with the property managers was very good. Check-in and check-out were easy and well-explained before we got there. Be sure to take in the Volcano National Park and the tidepool parks on the far side of a Pahua. There are also gorgeous waterfalls and a 2-mile lava tube to be explored in Hilo. Uncle Billy's in Hilo is a nice place to have dinner. Ken's Pancake House in Hilo has great pancakes with a local flavor. Pahua has the Black Rock Cafe, a cute local restaurant with good food and nice people. You'll enjoy your stay there!!! Recommend it highly!

Really enjoyed the stay! I would recommend this to my friends. Got to see beautiful views of the ocean. The kids liked it too. We had to watch them on the lava rocks out back as many of these rocks are sharp. Had beautiful cliff views. We were a bit too late in the season for whale watching as I believe this ends in March.

This is a beautiful property in a prime location for people who want to be near the ocean and nature 24/7. The house offers panoramic views of the beautiful volcanic coastline and ocean. One day we were thrilled to see whales spouting and jumping in the ocean all from our living room and lanai. We were very blessed to spend a month in this lovely home and found it perfect for relaxing around the house or short day trips. Mele Kohola is close to many sites plus you can get to any destination on the island in approximately 2 1/2-3 hours. The property managers are wonderful to work with and are always pleasant, helpful and conscientious. They made our vacation easy to plan and provided many amenities and tips that made our stay more comfortable. This is our second time staying at Mele Kohola and we sincerely hope that we have the good fortune of a third visit in the future!
