Holiday Weekend
Leo and Cheryl M. from Hilo, HI recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in July, 2014
Sunrise House was the perfect get away place for my husband and I to relax and unwind from our chaotic busy lives. The place was great for watching the sunrise and sunsets. The only thing we didn't like is the fact that the pond water doesn't circulate enough with the ocean flow, so the water gets really mucky with the sediment on the bottom. So, we climbed the wall and jumped into some fresh ocean water on the left side of the wall which was so refreshing and clean. The pond also felt weird on the bottom--like we were walking on carpet or something. However, I believe the pond is great if you have kids and you don't want to worry about them being pulled out by the current of the ocean. Loved the shower down by the walkway with the rocks sticking out to hang your towel, that was cool. And speaking of cool, the house was very cool with the open screens, and the ceiling fans---loved that as well.

Hawaii Throw Back
Larren H. from Cumming, GA recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in May, 2014
You can feel the love that is poured into this home. It is amazing that a house built in the sixties, sitting on the edge of the Pacific is in such wonderful condition. Is it tiny? Yes. Is it a perfect taste of Hawaiian life? I'd like to think so. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the ocean from almost every room from the house. Waking up in my bed and looking out to see the sunrise over the ocean every day made me smile. Washing dishes looking at the ocean made me smile. Swimming in our own tide pool and meeting the variety of fish that reside there, made me smile. It is a wonderful place on the coast of the Big Island! The one and only wish we had was that there wasn't SO much warning about break-ins. They can happen, we get it, it happens in our own suburban neighborhood in Atlanta. However, the warnings were so excessive they made us feel like we should fear for our safety while in the house. Is there really that much danger? That would be the only complaint. Everything else from the flowers and music upon entry, to the wonderful seating by the ocean was amazing.

Room with a View!
Charles H. from Mission Viejo, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 4 days in May, 2014
The view from Sunrise House is spectacular with the ocean coming right up to the property edge. We spent many hours enjoying it. The setting is very secluded which we especially liked. The only issue was that the internet did not work at first due to a faulty box provided by the ISP. We called Aloha Realty, the managers, and they sent Scott the handyman over the same morning. While we went to the Hilo Market, Scott reach the broadband company and had the part replaced at once. When we returned, everything had been fixed with no inconvenience to us. Great job!

The general experience was really good except for one thing. In my opinion, you need to make a set of stairs so that your guests can access the big bay more easily. I either had to go next door or clamber over the sharp rocks to go snorkeling in the large bay.

This is our second time at this property. We returned for the awesome ocean front view and the location to the tide pools. No beach front, but it is a wonderful gated community with beautiful walking and access to the ocean front. Serene, quiet, and just a piece of paradise!!! Highly recommend this to anyone looking to get away from the typical tourist areas.

Very cozy vacation rental. Enjoyed to ocean front location & view.Debris in neighboring developing lot was distracting. Was glad that we had daylight to find unit initially.Kitchen needs additional items- mixing bowls, hand mixer, additional plates. Could use an updated oven- one burner didn't work. Also 2nd bedroom seems to have a double bed, not as advertised queen bed.

This is/was a great spot but while we we there the lot next door was being cleared with heavy equipment which made it not as private as promised. A large elevated home is planned for the lot which will detract from the uniqueness of this spot.

Stayed for 7 days in January, 2014
there was a heavy rainstorm during the first night of our stay. the water came in flooding several places in the house, including my computer that was recharging by the vent. It is in the shop now. On day two the cable TV went, never to return. even with these issues the place is wonderful, the tide pool has fantastic tropical fish and the house is within walking distance of the champagne pool. I'm not sure whether I would recommend the house due to the safety hazard of the1/2 inch of water the electrical cords and power strip were sitting in after the rain.

Not For Everyone
A guest from Maple Ridge, BC does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 3 days in November, 2013
Although the review suggest a nice place you need to realize that this cottage (I would not call it a house) is probably more than 70 years old and look it's age. I liked the bed and the Wifi worked fine but the appliances are very old, lots of the furniture is thrift store quality and it smells in the unit. The pool seems like a nice add-on but it's tidal so it's only full enough to swim an hour a day (or night) and once the kids saw the fish, crabs and eels in it they would go near it.All together there are many other places that are cheaper and a lot nicer than this place, it cost us $220 a night when it was all said and done and it's definitely not worth anything close to it.

Very cute cottage that was clean upon our arrival. A few comments: need to be able to turn off the motion light outside dining area, would be nice to have a few hooks in bathroom to hang towels, husband wanted a bigger tv. One last comment: the oceanfront hot pond is for appearance only as it really is not for swimming. Were at the cottage during stormy weather. I believe it was window in dining area that leaked water. The cottage is equipped with almost everything one can think of from good knives to mosquito spray. We had 3 in our party and the space was quite perfect for us.

A Trip Back in Time!
Polly T. from Creston, BC recommends this property.
Stayed for 17 days in October, 2013
We arrived at night in pouring rain, exhausted after a long journey from Canada, and bad tempered after getting lost, but the moment we walked in we were soothed by the Hawaiian music, the welcoming flowers, fruit, and the restful atmosphere. This 60's Sea Side Cottage was perfect for our need to relax and recoup, so restful with the sound of the waves and the coqui frogs at night, and very private! I particularly loved the old fashioned bathroom with a huge counter for all my junk, and the old fashioned ceiling fans in every room! Please don?t change a thing, we will be back!I sat out every morning on the lawn above the fish pond, with my mug of coffee, to watch the sunrise, such a rewarding experience! The tidal fish pond was a delight, the exotic fish all had different characters, we even named a few. The beautiful large green gecko which appeared around the cottage was so interested in our goings on, we called it Kiki, and the cheeky tiny one was junior! We even had a mongoose named Morris who liked to steal the fish food! The weathered teak deck furniture was also perfect for our needs. I had fun snorkeling in the pond, though we spent time every day in the nearby Ahalanui volcanic hot pond. Most therapeutic, my husband who has a crushed vertebrae, found it most beneficial. The fish here were also very interesting! The tidal pools at Wai?apae were also fascinating! We loved the local markets and virtually lived on fish and fruit! Great Wednesday Luau at Kalapana, great music, great food, wonderful tropical drinks, great local people who made us so welcome and involved us in the dancing, I even got Hula lessons from the local experts, so much fun for a very senior couple!Mahalo for making our stay so memorable.

Delightful Family Property
Paul K. from Ashbury, NSW recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in July, 2013
Our family had a wonderful stay in the Kapoho area mostly due to the position and quality of the Sunrise accommodation. The house is secluded enough to feel like you're away from it all but close enough in driving distance to all the amenities of Pahoa and Hilo. The property itself catered well for our family of two adults and two young teens and was in good condition throughout. At the end of our stay we were divided as to whether having tropical fish in the tide pool at the rear of the property was a good thing. We were delighted to see the different array of species of fish but sad to see they had a confined ecosystem. They also appeared to expect to be fed by humans as they always raced up to us whenever we were close by. This said, it was still beautiful to see the fish up close daily and the setting was magical. We hope to be back in the next few years.

We stayed here end of May. The weather was fabulous. The star-gazing was wonderful. The proximity to the ocean was awesome! We made friends with the many local geckos, and thoroughly enjoyed the local tide pools, the drive down the "Red Road", and trips to the volcanoes. The house fixtures were a bit more "dated" than I had realized from the pictures, but it was very clean. Overall it was very functional. One thing that was a bit off-putting was all of the warnings about locking the doors and closing all windows for safety. I appreciate a safe approach, and I recognize that this is a home that is sometimes vacant in a remote area, and so rental homes like this are a greater target for theft. It would have been nice to be warned a little more upfront so it didn't seem so alarming when we arrived. We had no incidents and followed instructions. Eventually it was apparent that all of the warnings were strictly cautionary.Thank you for sharing your home with us. We have already passed your information to a friend :)

Stunning oceanfront cottage
A guest from Kailua-Kona, HI recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in May, 2013
Lovely visit at the Sunrise House in Kapoho for the long weekend! The ocean was in a fierce mood and was quite entertaining to watch at all times of the day. It would slam against the retaining wall and shoot 20 feet into the air. The cottage was nicely decorated with large windows for a constant view of the ocean. The less than satisfactory items were the tired looking rugs in the bathroom which could be replaced and the bed size in the north bedroom. We're used to a Cal King so the queen or double that was in there was quite tight. Overall, an excellent stay and we'll be back for sure!

A guest from Oshkosh, WI recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in April, 2013
Our family loved everything about this rental and would come back again and recommend it anytime someone is looking for oceanfront privacy near Champagne Pond or the tide pools. The views from within the home are great, our family loved the fishpond out front where we could get an up close view of a very diverse variety of fish. Sensor lights and beeping at the sliding glass door were kind of annoying and woke us up some. Also, no light at night for the patio so eating outside wasn't easy. Since everything else was so good, it wasn't a huge problem, but doing something about it would be nice.Perfect for entertaining and chilling out. Loved it!!!! Mahalo.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 6-night stay at the Sunrise House. High tides and high winds made for exciting surf pounding action at night, at times loud enough to drown out the Coqui orchestra singing us to sleep. Every morning we rushed excitedly down to the tidal pool to view its inhabitants. We also spotted many turtles, bobbing in the surf. Loved watching the surfers at Pohoiki Bay, chatting with the locals, and shopping in Pahoa (always a trip!) Thanks for the memories, we will be back!

What a great place! My husband and I spent our 20th anniversary here Nov/12 and it was perfect. Completely private, breathtaking views, tide pool full of fish in the backyard...I could go on & on. We arrived when it was dark out, and were blown away by the view through the wall of windows in the morning. This is like a family cottage- not luxurious, but comfy and clean. The management was excellent when I had questions & recommended a fantastic little restaurant in Pahoa called Kaleo's, housekeeper left a big bowl of fresh fruit & avocados on the table. I loved this place and hope to go back in 2014 (counting the days!!!). Was a little concerned at first about some comments about the area not being very safe, but this is in a gated area, and we always felt very safe & pretty much had only singing coqui frogs for company! Did I mention that we LOVED this place?!

We had a very good time at this house. It is an older home and certainly off the beaten track which gives you great privacy. This home is very well stocked just in case you forget something (salt usually :) ). The ocean breeze cross-ventilation keeps the house very cool during after sundown. Watching the sunrises over the pacific to the sounds of ocean waves crashing against the tide-pool walls, in your pajamas with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in your hand is an experience not commonly found. This location of the island is very green being on the windward side of the island. Bugs come with the territory but it did not bother us because we made sure to keep the screen-doors shut, and opened them minimally when needed, and making sure to keep a clean kitchen. These small steps will ensure you enjoy what this place has to offer!Champagne pond is half a mile away and is a great place for snorkelling. The pirvate tide-pool in front of the house had a fairly good variety of fish when we were there. There is a family of 2-3 shy moray eels living under the last step.

We really enjoyed our stay at Sunrise House, especially the ocean view&tidal pool with neat fish to watch &swim with. One needs to drive a bit for food,&other outings but everything is beautiful to see. I would have liked to have a broom/vac or something to keep the floors /rugs swept up from the grass & bugs that get inside. Overall a very special place.

Both of us had the most wonderful, peaceful stay at Sunrise. The house, the beauty of the location, the quiet....the entire experience transformed our weary spirits and sparked our inner light. The only problem was having to leave. The place felt like an old friend welcoming us with open arms. The sounds of dancing palms, coqui frogs and waves allowed renewal and gave us happy deep sleep. We want so much to return since the house is full of good energy. And Kapoho Bay is magical....very few people and the darkness of night allowed us to see so many more stars. The place is full of light! And for the Aloha Coast staff, they started the entire happy process from day one of our booking. Their kindness was and still is greatly appreciated. Even the housekeeper had left us fruits from her very own garden. It just felt so comfortable and "just for us." Sunrise House is the place of dreams.

The nearest town is 20 minutes away so if you're looking for something off the beaten path; this is it. It's near a volcanically-heated public pool, lava flows, jungle, and is located in a nice gated neighborhood. It has a private tide pool with ocean tropical fish and two eels. The house is simple but clean and charming.

We expected an escape to a beautiful oceanfront spot remote from the usual hotel experience. The beauty, uniqueness, and creature comforts of the Sunrise House exceeded our high expectations. The views thru the large picture windows and sliding door appear on the website, and are even nice in person. Being able to take a few steps and swim in a small private lagoon with humus, take an outdoor shower, is a rare treat. The living room contains nice tv with satellite, the kitchen has all one needs. An outdoor grill is there if one wants. Nice venting in the house keeps it cool and the sounds of the wind, occasional rain, and nightlife (frogs mostly) make it a really fun rural Hawaii experience. We really liked the extreme ease of getting the gate pass and keys. The owners obviously take pride in their place. Highly recommended.

The Sunrise house is AMAZING! Loved every second of being there... there was so much beauty, peace and nature. I hate Cane spiders and Cockroaches, but this place just made me even love those while there. It rained hard the whole time we were there, but the morning we left, the sun decided to come out and so did all the beautiful snails, frogs and slugs... ones we would never see back home in Los Angeles. My grandmother owned the Sunrise House about 20 years ago and I brought a lot of pictures back for her. She misses Kapoho a lot and informed me that she would like to come to Sunrise house next year :) It was such a lovely stay! Oh and I must must must add, the home was incredible clean and the lagoon crisp and clear. I read reviews where people complained of dirt in the house and muck in the lagoon... that was definitely not the case. The second I walked in the house I was amazed at the upkeep. The fresh flowers were such a nice touch too! Thank you!

Not every vacation rental will be a state-of-the-art upgraded home. The photos online and detailed description of home are an accurate representation of the home and the price is commensurate with the accommodations. Unfortunately, we have no control over the weather and would have appreciated hearing from the guest about the leaks as they occured that they could have been attended to. :) Hawaii Holiday Management

We came to Hawaii for the volcanoes and visited the park four times but were completely captivated by the waves at our doorstep and the tidal/swimming pool with tropical fish and lovely swimming. The house had a lovely cottage feel and was perfect for us and our 3 year old. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare tasty meals ranging from hawaiian steaks on the BBQ to fresh fish (although our deep sea fishing trip was a bust). If we ever get back to Hawaii we'll be staying at Sunrise House.

Had a wonderful time at Sunrise House!! The view of Kapoho Bay is AMAZING and worth every penny. The private lagoon is HEAVEN and we really enjoyed swimming in our very own saltwater "fish tank" and immensely enjoyed watching and feeding the fish every morning after sunrise and high tide. There are even crabs that march along the sea wall! The outdoor shower is a big plus. We LOVED the new teak lounge chairs and outside dining table that were just added. The home itself was older but comfortable...just right for two single people or two couples. The living room furniture was also comfortable and we enjoyed having DishNetwork television at night. There are a couple of security issues, but this is not unusual for the Kapoho/Puna area on the Big Island. Just be smart and keep things locked up at night and there shouldn't be a problem. Overall, we had a very relaxing vacation at Sunrise House and the gorgeous scenery and falling asleep to ocean waves and Coqui frogs was just what we needed.

Those in search of extravagant accommodations and concierge service should go to the Kona side. No waving palms and sandy beaches here. Nor are there luaus or beach parties or floor shows. No crowds, either. The house is 50 years old but has been well cared for. We wanted for nothing except more time to enjoy dramatic sunrises, daily rain showers, mongooses (proper name for more than one mongoose), and dozens of tropical fish in our own private "tide pool". Instead of sandy beaches we had crashing waves. Instead of wild parties and a stream of exotic restaurants, we had books, the volcano park, the gorgeous botanical garden in the seaside gorge north of Hilo, breathtaking Akaka Falls (440'), floating in the tide pool among the tropical fish, and simple home cooked meals (I.e., beer and sandwiches). All for the price of a bare hotel room in the middle of a crowded resort. Highly recommended for those wanting to really get away.

We knew we were getting a small, older house and that was no problem. We were so excited to arrive and were telling everyone about it. But there was a bit of a shock when we got there. It's not just outdated, but actually rundown and dirty. We cleaned the microwave and fridge before we even used them. The freezer stunk badly so I cleaned that out, threw out all the food in there and bought a new baking soda box. We also bought all the cleaning supplies we used. The floors made your socks filthy. There were minor broken things all over the house. It needed a paint job badly, the ceilings were all peeling and all metal spots were rusting (more than normal "at the beach" stuff - it was obvious nothing had been done in years). None of the regular doors or screen doors closed tight which allowed the cockroaches to come in. We held out for four days but finally had to leave. We just were not comfortable with the place, knowing how much dirt we could see, what was it we weren't seeing? Like the bed and bedding?? When we left early the realty company never even bothered to ask us why. Although, before we arrived, they were extremely helpful.

The house itself is lovely. I was not familiar with the area and I felt a bit unsafe there after seeing nearby properties with many security signs and razor wire fences. I also think the tidal pool wall should be opened so fish can go out. To me, there seemed to be too many fish in that small pond. Property management was very responsive to questions I had.

This was the most well-equipped rental we had ever stayed in. Everything we needed for a great stay was conveniently there, from ice-chest to umbrella, from books, games, guidebooks and maps to extra beach towels, and much more. It was clean, and pleasantly furnished. We watched the fish in the tidepool during the day and enjoyed the singing of the frogs at night. Just remember not to park your car, or take a nap, under a coconut palm (Bonk!)

This is such a wonderful vacation rental! The view is stunning. A true Hawaiian experience with great service (when we arrived the lights were on, music was playing and fresh flowers were put in several rooms!). You can easily visit all the main sites of the Big Island from here. Even when it is raining it is beautiful!

This was the most relaxing peaceful place that I have ever visited. The tidepool and the ocean had me mesmerized. If you want touristy and convenience to tourist attractions, this is not the place to stay. It is a wonderful quiet getaway. Pahoa offers a nice little gift shop (Puna Style), good food, three grocery stores, great massage (Isis and Stephaine), tattooing opportunity (Rudedogg, and great Sunday Market for fresh fruits, vegetables, and honey. We loved the little house and the beautiful view! We'd love to stay there again. If I am to express one complaint, it would be the condition of the kitchen sink. It was in very bad shape and rusty all around it. It could stand to be replaced. Also, the satellite antenna is extremely rusty and didn't look very stable. Overall though, it was wonderful. Casey was very sweet and helpful too. A joy.

I could have stayed on the patio for hours on end. We had first-time visitors with us, and they were extremely delighted! We WILL be back, and next time for much longer. No negatives here! Mahalo. Escape from the stress of the ?real world?. Relax, unwind and rejuvenate your mind, spirit and soul at this special part of the world. We have always wanted to experience ?old Hawaii?, and this is probably what it was like many years ago. You?ll love the privacy, along with the sounds of the surf, and the private tide pool in the back yard. The perfect place for that romantic get away. We watched the sunrise every morning and the moon rise at night. We were lucky enough to be there with a full moon also. Loved the feeling like no one was around, yet there were neighbors right next door. It is such a tranquil place. Sunrise house had everything we needed. And the little touches, like the fresh flowers and the fruit that was there when we arrived. Mahalo to K.C. for leaving those little touches and making sure our accommodations were very clean when we arrived. It was also a great location on this side of the Big Island. Close to Champagne pond, Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui warm pool, Issac Hale Beach Park, (where we took a great boat trip ?Lava Ocean Adventures?), also Pohoiki warm pool all just a short drive away. Not to mention the great little town of Pohoa with some good places to eat there, with that warm Aloha spirit. Mahalo, for making available and sharing this little piece of paradise with us. Next time we are on the Big Island we will definitely be staying at Sunrise House, just wish we could have had it for a longer stay. Next time will be longer.

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, PLEASE READ BEFORE RENTING THE SUNRISE HALE AT KAPOHO!
Debra G. from Waianae, HI does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 4 days in October, 2009
I booked the Kapoho Sunrise Hale because I wanted direct swimming access to the ocean. I was excited about staying at the Sunrise Hale because there was direct access to a natural private tide pool directly on the property. However, when I arrived, I noticed that the natural tide pool was so filthy and full of invasive sea weed. When I spoke with the neighbors, I discovered that the wall was built illegally! Further, the wall that surrounds the tide pool blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides. What remains is a stagnant pool of invasive sea weed, sad little fishes forever trapped in the pool with little food to eat, and the perfect spawning grounds for every type of flesh eating bacteria imagined. I'm writing this review for the safety of other visitors who stay at the Sunrise Hale. DO NOT ENTER THE TIDE POOL AT THE SUNRISE HALE IN KAPOHO! If you absolutely must enter it, try not to disturb the sediment at the bottom of the pool, enter at high tide only, wear your shoes, and rinse off with soap immediately after exiting the pool. If you have an open wound, do not enter the pool.

Property Manager Response:
Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals
We regret that this guest interpreted the naturally occurring seaweed in the oceanside tide pool of Sunrise House as "filthy and invasive". Healthy tide pools in and immediately adjacent to the ocean contain seaweed and a variety of other botanical and zoological life including small fish and eels, which to some are fascinating and interesting but to others are apparently uninviting. The sea wall surrounding the tide pool actually keeps out unnatural inorganic matter that would otherwise flow into the pool with extreme high tides and storms, such as fishing nets, floats, plastic bottles, and other assorted flotsam and jetsam that sadly floats on the currents of all our oceans, including the otherwise pristine Hawaiian Pacific Ocean. The guest was incorrect to state that the sea wall "blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides." Apparently the guest did not realize that that the water level of the tide pool is always exactly at sea level, fluctuating twice a day with the tides, and that the entire Kapoho area is famous for its inland tide pools, many of which are hundreds of yards from the ocean yet flush cleanly twice a day with the incoming and outgoing tides. The tides penetrate the entire community just a few feet below the surface of the ground and are constantly moving in and out. Kapoho is situated on land so porous that the seawater flushes all these tide pools, not from the surface but from underneath the porous lava on which they are perched. The "flesh eating bacteria" comment reflects a very fanciful imagination. However, the guest was correct about one thing. We and all responsible property managers recommend that guests with open wounds avoid swimming not only in any of the Kapoho tide pools but also in Kapoho Bay and elsewhere in the ocean, and that guests always shower after swimming in non-chlorinated water.

Since it was so rainy while we were there, it would have been nice to have the TV working (we are not usually TV people but we were housebound much of the time). Looked like the satellite dish is rusted out. I would also recommend that a sign about not parking below the coconuts be prominently displayed upon entering the property. Luckily we thought of this and moved our car before the big storm!!

This house and its location is perfect for me. The foliage shields you from neighboring houses. The view of the ocean from the entire front of the house is spectacular. I'd wake early every morning (my body was on Eastern Time) and just sit and watch the waves come in and the black crabs scamper along the seawall. Truly peaceful. The house itself is airy (literally and figuratively) and of sufficient age to be comfortable (I like older homes). The tide pool was cold, not hot as expected, but fun for the family and nicely private. My only complaint is with kitchen ware (as usual). The kitchen needs a liquid measuring cup, preferably glass, and is in desperate need some microwavable cooking dishes. The blender was a bit tired, but so it goes with rental properties. Everything else was great. I could live there full-time, no problem. The Kapoho Beach Community was very nice to walk around. One word of warning for those who live in cities: if you don't like nighttime noises, you may not like the frogs that "sing" at night. It's louder than the peepers in vernal pools and way louder than the cicadas in August. The noise didn't bother me, but I read other reviews where people who were unaccustomed to natural sounds found it bothersome. Don't know whether the frogs are seasonal or year round.

The location is quite nice and secluded, great view. HOWEVER, from the moment we arrived, the place was a literal furnace: the ceiling fans had been left on but made absolutely no difference; they were grossly inadequate to properly ventilate the heat that builds up as soon as the sun rises. By 6:30 each morning, the heat had started. We hurried through coffee & left, dreading our return in the evening. Very unfortunate, quite unacceptable. There needs to be much better heat ventilation - period.Guests should be notified up front re: the din of frogs at night. This is no small issue: it is louder than the sound of the surf, and even penetrates earplugs. From a cleanliness standpoint, the walls and ceilings need scrubbing or painting. Lots of food or dead bug splotches.

The Sunrise House is great for a small family or two couples (or singles). Property is kept real nice and house was clean. For price, I would think that some of the smaller appliances could be replaced (coffee maker was falling apart and toaster only toasts one side), but other than that, we were very satisfied. It is the best place to be if you don't want to be in the middle of the tourist hub bub. Very secluded. You must like to listen to the sound of the ocean and jungle chirps at night.

We love it because it is very private and has a view that can be found few places on earth. It is an incredibly relaxing place to spend time and is convenient to many activities and sights. It's not the Four Seasons, mind you, but that is part of the charm. It is clean, well maintained and well equipped- not to mention as "critter-free" as a place could be in that area. It is also well-equipped so you can be pretty self-sufficient. We will be back!

Loved the setting -- total privacy, (which can be rare in that area); great ocean action, but with the sea wall providing a protected space; entertaining sea life easily viewed, etc. The closest anything is about 8 miles in the town of Pahoa, which had some great restaurants & lots of local color (some of it quite scruffy). We had only one day of rain, & there were lots of good things to explore. The house itself could use a bit of tweaking. A king size bed would be nice, & the kitchen cabinets/shelving isn't very functional. There's also a weird situation with the washer/dryer back to back with access through two different rooms...., but in general it's a lovely setting and a comfortable place. I'd go back again:)
