HULA COVE IS ONE OF THOSE SWEET OLD COTTAGES built many years ago specifically as a beach house. It has the true vintage feel of a simpler time with the modern amenities of today. Hula Cove has a large living/bedroom area, kitchen, and full bath with shower. A broad outdoor lanai across the entire front of the house practically sits right on top of the sparkling clear tide pools.

WAKE UP TO THAT FABULOUS VIEW of the famous Waiopae ponds! Hula Cove is the last house at the end of the tide pools that attract visitors to this area. Down the road others are parking their cars after their drive to Kapoho, hauling their snorkel gear over the lava, and figuring out where to leave their things while they go in the water. All you have to do is _roll out of bed and wade in!_ You simply walk down the nice cement steps that gently lead you into the warm water. Rent a kayak and really explore the area!

A short video gives you a brief feel for the beauty

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION and at an affordable price! Because Hula Cove is a small cottage with a queen bed, you can enjoy a waterfront property without paying oceanfront rates.

HULA COVE ISN'T FANCY, BUT IT'S FUN! When you're not snorkeling or swimming, the owners have provided a nice flat-screen satellite TV and high-speed Internet access for your laptop. Hula Cove has a galley kitchen and the cottage is located behind a private gate on a fairly large lot.

Year-round rate range is $135 - $185 per night, depending upon length of your stay and dates of your visit. Cleaning fee is $75

Not much fun.
David C W. from Freeland, WA does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 7 days in March, 2014
The worst vacation of our lives. The cabin was very nice with a truly beautiful view when the rain cleared enough to see it. The tide pool would have been very nice to snorkel it were it not for the slightly septic look it had at our end. The location was at least a half hour drive from anywhere. It rained roughly 80% of the time we were there. Probably won't ever be back.

Fantastic Getaway Spot!
Janelle J. from Vancouver, BC recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in September, 2013
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hula Cove at the Kapoho Tide Pools. The proximity of the house to the pools can't be beat (just below the lanai) and the use of their snorkel gear was a nice bonus. The property is located in an area that was fairly close to other sights that we wanted to see, and some of the drives to get to these places were stunning! The house was very well stocked with anything we needed in the kitchen as well as extra towels, etc. A great experience overall!

Cute cottage in a spectacular setting
A guest from Fairfield, OH recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in September, 2013
Walking right off of the lanai into the tide pools is terrific. The cottage is just right for 2 people and has all you could possibly need including washer and dryer and beach and snorkel equipment. In September, it does get pretty hot during the afternoon, but it always cooled off nicely by bedtime, so sleeping was never a problem. The snorkeling is just terrific in the warm calm waters of the tide pools. There are other people that walk close to the property to gain access to the water, but we used them to get tips on where to go for activities and meals. Locals and frequent visitors are always a great source of good information. The enclosed yard with a locked gate and private parking made it nice when returning from a day of sightseeing.

Wonderful place to stay
A guest from Buffalo, NY recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in August, 2013
Other than the cottage needing a thorough cleaning, not just a clean-up after the last guest, this place is PHENOMENAL! The location is perfect! Snorkeling 15 feet from the door in the protected lagoons cannot be matched anywhere. Jewell and I will return the next time we go the the Big Island! 5 geckos plus two babies and not 2 geckos as noted by prior guests. Fish and Chips at the Pahoa Fresh Fish Market ()are the best I've had anywhere and very reasonably priced. If you want a guide for snorkeling (either teaching or showing the pathways to the various pools) contact Frank (){Frank does not charge for his time}- Frank is a great guy! If you get tired of the marvelous fresh fish and want a good steak to cook, go to the Malama Market in Pahoa.

Hula Cove is truly Heaven on Earth. The location alone can't be surpassed. We felt like we were home. The home was immaculate and took my breath away. Walking out the sliding glass doors and into the water for a snorkel with the sea turtles and gorgeous tropical fish was AMAZING!! We are already planning our return to this gem. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy this home.

Loved the location. Felt right at home. The cozy feeling of being at the end of cove with the exception of the weekend visitors. Loved snorkeling everyday and bike riding the neighborhood and champagne ponds. Only improvements needed are new pots and pans, and a new comfortable mattress with nice sheets and bedding. Thanks for a little piece of heaven.

I got in late, but lights and music were on for a warm welcome. Had no problem finding Hula Cove in the dark. Clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed. 12 steps from the back step to into the water for snorkeling (your mileage may vary). I was visiting alone, and with just common sense, I felt safe on the property and my belongings secure while out in the water. This place is a treasure. I will be back.

Our second booking of this property. It is a great location on the "wet" side of the island, excellent if you want to rest and snorkle, really experience genuine Hawaii. Close to Volcanoes National Park and the lava viewing area, not a bad drive to the green sand beach/south point...but a pretty long drive to Kona. I am sure we will be back.

I loved the house. It was beyond all of my expectations. But, the location is by far the best part of this property. I loved the tide pools. They have tons of fish and it's just a relaxing place to stay. The home also provided you with more items than I expected. Flashlights, ponchos, washer and dryer, snorkel gear and much more. Loved riding the bikes around too. This was a trip for my mother and I. But this location would be great for any small family or honeymoon. I am so happy we chose Hula Cove!!!

Amy S. from Home, WA recommends this property.
Stayed for 2 days in April, 2012
This property has even more amenities than listed - it is a perfect spot for a couple to stay and noticed it could even accommodate a couple of small children too (extra bedding and cushions, could seat 4 at the outdoor table, SUPER mellow and safe swimming right in eyeshot of the lanai.) Only thing to know is that a public access 'trail' ends right at this property and its seemingly private tide pool, so expect a few locals and visitors throughout the day (until 7pm.) We had no problems with this, but some previous guests mentioned it in the guest book. Never saw or heard a neighbor, so we felt like we had the spot to ourselves aside from an a=occasional drop in snorkeler. Already planning our next visit - trying to stay for 4 days next time!

Hula Cove felt like home immediately! We were so sad to leave and are already talking about going back. The cottage had everything we needed including bikes and snorkeling gear (and a full size washer and dryer!). The cottage is private yet feels very safe and secure. We loved the off-street parking. Vistors sharing our tide pool were all very well-behaved. Snorkeling was a dream but all you have to do is look over the railing to see lots of beautiful tropical fish! Fell asleep to the sounds of breakers, birds and frogs and have never slept so well! Took day trips all over the island but next time think we will just fly into Hilo, rent a car, stock up on groceries and "hang loose" on the deck until it's time to leave! "Mahalo" for our wonderful stay!

We found the cottage to be such a nice place to come "home" to after our daily excursions. We also enjoyed just relaxing on the lanai and snorkeling steps from the back door. The water was amazingly clear and the fish very plentiful. We even enjoyed the chorus of the frogs every night. We were pleasantly surprised to find the cottage overstocked with lots of extra items left by previous guests for everyone to share - sunscreen, condiments, teas, coffee, rice, etc. This was the first time we have ever rented our own private place and it was a great experience!

Beautiful spot
A guest from Lake Oswego, OR recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in June, 2011
This home is quite cute, comfortable and well-equipped. Being able to look down on the water from the lanai and see all the fish was delightful. Also, we loved finding the bikes for us to use. Future guests should be aware, though, that this is not a "secluded" spot. A trail from the street opens out just to the right of the cottage, and it is frequently used by people who spread out along the rocks on the opposite side and swim in the pools in front of the property. There was some noise associated with this use, and we also experienced two rather noisy groups in the house alongside--numerous young people one day/night and a group of children another afternoon. Although well-screened with foliage, that house is fairly close by. Also, be prepared for lots of frog noise at night.Aside from that, we had fun staying here and would come back again. It's an interesting part of the Big Island and there wasn't any VOG.

Adorable cottage perfect for snorkelers, swimmers, and nature lovers
Linda M. from Portland, OR recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in May, 2011
This beach house is so charming and the location is fantastic if you are a nature lover who likes to get in the water and check out the wildlife! The house is tucked away in a sweet little cove right on the water- so keep in mind the locals and other vacationers also find this cove appealing and you may be sharing the space with beach-going families, young kids included, and some groups with radios. Depending on the timing you could have this cove almost to yourself, or be sharing it with a partying group. The Puna area is one of my favorite areas of the island with its lush vegetation, relative remoteness from masses of people, and the snorkeling. Keep in mind this is not a sandy beach area at all- it is all lava rock so if you are looking for sand, this is not the place.

The house was very nice and it's in a beautiful location. Some reviewers complained about the noisy frogs, but I thought they were great. I slept great. The only negative thing I have to say is that there were quite a few bugs in the place when we arrived. My wife wasn't pleased. After I killed them all the first night, there wasn't any problem. Possibly someone had left a door or window opened before we arrived? We will definitely consider returning.

We wish we knew this before we stayed here... The property and the location is stunning however after noticing a 'film' in the lava pools right in front of the property I did some investigating on the internet. The film is fresh water mixing with salt water but the water is not so 'fresh' it seems there is a problem with raw sewage leaking from cesspools from the community and entering the lava pools. I was appalled that the management or owners would not even give a warning to the guests as tests have been done showing elevated levels of bacteria caused by fecal matter. Check it out yourself and Google "Kapoho Tide Pools Sewage". In my opinion this is a lawsuit waiting to happen as anyone with a cut is at risk of infection not to mention the disgusting factor. If you do go we suggest snorkeling at high tide and walk along the lava to the outer pools where the snorkeling is better anyway, advice the owners should be mentioning in their welcome booklet at the house!! It is a shame that the community and regional officials have ignored this issue for the last 15 years (they have know about it for that long!) as this is one of the most beautiful locations on the island.

Hello Hula Cove!
A guest from Westville, OK recommends this property.
Stayed for 14 days in December, 2010
We rented this property with the hopes that it would be off the beaten path and in the middle of nowhere. It was exactly that. We were about 30 minutes from groceries and supplies in Pahoa. We loved the snorkling right out the back door. Everthing was super clean although we never saw any people that maintained the property until the day we were leaving. I beleive they had been on vacation themselves. This property is very nice if you plan on seeing the volcano, snorkling and hiking. We also drove to Hawi and did a zipline with Eco Tours. We went on a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian. Everything was within driving distance even when we went to Kona (about a 2 1/2 hour drive). We loved this property and it's secluded feel. We enjoyed everything that was offered and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get away to a place that is out of the way of the rush of things. The guest book that everyone contributes to was one of our favorite things. If you go to this property you will never forget it as it allows you to relax in a way you never thought possible.

Hula Cove is definitely one of God's most beautiful creations. My husband & I were looking for a place to try our hand at snorkeling, go sightseeing, and spend time relaxing by the ocean. The different varieties of fish were amazing, the sound of the surf and the various night calls of the birds & frogs was peaceful. This was definitely a piece of paradise. This was one of the best vacation rentals for us so far, equals our palapa rental in Yelapa Mx at half the cost!! I have recommended this property to many of our friends and associates who are thinking of a trip to the Big Island!

The larger two counter stools could just be cut down about 6 inches to make them the right height. Since there is no table and chairs in this cottage I recommend a set of comfortable couter stools that are the correct height. Everthing else great

Hula Cove was a great place to stay. My favorite things were:-the proximity to the tidepool, I could just sit on the lanai and watch the fish swimming.-a well-appointed kitchen, including a coffee machine and grinder-washer and dryer - having those was just awesomeonly thing negative about the location was it took a little while to get back out to the highway to explore other parts of the island, but it's worth it to be on the water. And some of the kitchen stuff was a little worse for the wear, particularly the knives.

Hula Cove, Puna
Oliver R. from Victoria, BC recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in November, 2009
The property was delightful, very quiet and private as we wished, very well maintained, and better provided with everyting, from rice cooker to washer and dryer to sun lotion, than any property I have ever rented! Location was as described. It was wonderful to slip off the lanai right into a tidal pool full of tame tropical fish! we will certainly return to this place in future

I loved the property and it exceeded my expectations. The minute I opened the door I fell in love with this hidden gem. The location on the tidepools allowed me to just jump in for a swim any time I wanted to cool off. The waters were calm and the snorkeling was great. Got to watch the fish right off the back deck. Everything a renter could ask for was provided. The place was immaculate. I rode down the road to the night time lava viewing area which turned out to be a true once in a lifetime experience. I thank the owners for making this rental available.

Little paradise in Kapoho
A guest from Bellevue, WA recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in May, 2009
I stayed alone in the house, for one week at the end of May 2009, and I loved it. I came for some appointments in the Puna area, and also had to work. While the house is tiny and really only for couples or single travellers, it is perfect and seems like heaven. I got there late at night in pouring rain, and did not see anything of the property or area. I was stunned the next morning when I saw where I was! You literally fall out of bed and can walk into your "own" little pool, that is connected to the open ocean, after some swimming around the rocks. From the deck behind the house, you can see and hear the ocean which I really appreciated. I especially liked falling asleep with the sound of the ocean. I will certainly come back.

Beverly M. from Grand Rapids, MI recommends this property.

This is a real getaway and great for snorkeling in the winter on the Hilo side of the island. While the public has also found the tide pools spectacular, it is still the most private you will likely get in Hawaii! We really enjoyed our stay and found all very comfortable and clean.

Snorklers Paridise
Colleen & Franco L. from Kelowna, BC recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in February, 2009
Lost in Paridise, a wonderful spot to get away from the madening crowds of tourists that flock to the Resort side of the Island of Hawai'i. A quiet comfortable hawaiian holiday cabin tucked away at the end of a tide pool that offers hours of relaxation and that laid back feeling of lost in another year/another place. We were fortunate with mother nature and only had rain for 3 hours during one night that brought out the geckos and frogs to serenade for the rest of the night. Wonderful simply wonderful.
