Not only was the rental house clean and perfectly functional, but it was in a setting of stunning natural beauty, peace, and privacy... and our dog was welcome, too. Running with him on the gorgeous, deserted beach each morning was exhilarating. Soaking in the spa at night, hearing nothing but the sounds of the sea, was a deeply soothing ritual. The new Wi-Fi connection did not work with our computer, but that turned out to be a blessing, enabling us to truly restore and refresh our souls. Stayed for 4 days in February, 2013 Have spent many years going to Irish Beach at different vacation rentals both through rental agency and by individual owner, so know what should be expected for guests. The Carter has a great view, was over all clean and wonderful choice for two people. Some areas that could be improved are: Master bath toilet does not flush well. Some of the starter supplies should be improved. For instance, there should be more than one trash bag available and some type of sponge or brush for doing the dishes. Also, the fire place was set up, but was full of ash from previous fires. Should be cleaned out prior to new guests arriving. Spa worked great and the deck is very nice. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2013 The picture of this property on the VRBO site is NOT a good representation of this property. There is a view but not as advertised. There is also no view from the hot tub unless you sit up on the edge or stretch your neck if you are tall. The fire place does not vent properly and the house gets smokey while having a fire. The house is a bit dated but very clean and comfy. We had a great weekend all in all. The deer were wonderful. We never did find the beach access . It was not convenient after one try we gave up. We spent our days on the shore and our nights in the hot tub. A family of deer regularly showed up to greet us from a slight distance. The salty ocean air was refreshing and the spray could be seen from miles away. We drove a little way and saw seals, baby whales, and huge clusters of kelp. We really, really appreciate the dogs-allowed policy, although our dog died a few months ago. He loved it last time, though.A couple of relatively minor things:We were surprised the Mel Gibson poster was still up. We brought some fabric to cover it just in case it was. (Even if he had not fallen from grace, a Hollywood movie poster seems out of place with all of the other ocean and nature-themed art.)We would have liked to be able to make the hot tub a little warmer.I understand that it's challenging to clean all of your rentals in such a tight window of time, but there were quite a few cobwebs in the house.We would have liked a bigger, fancier screen to watch movies at night, but the lightshow in the sky made up for it. We had heard that Mendocino was a very nice place to stay. Fortunately for us, we found out about the Irish Beach Rental Agency (through /) and we booked our location. I was completely blown away at the beauty of this place. The views were unreal, and the Irish Beach is a MUST-SEE place. The small disappointment (that we quickly got over) was that we thought we were not going to be nearby anyone. However, the rental home is in a neighborhood-like area and there are homes around you - though we really didn't see any of our neighbors. Other than that minor glitch, we loved our stay! The house was clean and comfortable, the area was perfect, great ocean views. We woke up every morning to a family of deers right outside the front door. The location was perfect, private, and centrally located to every where we wanted to visit. If you want to take a vacation away from the hotel scene and you appreciate great ocean views and privacy, this is the perfect spot for you. So much so, we are already planning our next trip. It was cozy, clean and everything worked. We where able to share with my sister and her boy friend and they feel the same. We were also able to have our dog there and she loved it also. The first thing I did when i got to work after our three days at the house was call Barbara and tell her how much we all enjoyed our stay. It was perfect. Very informative. Who ever designed it did an excellent job. We have always felt that the Mendocino coast is one of the most beautiful coast lines in the world. We especially like the Point Arena/Manchester area because of its remote, uncrowded, unspoiled, peaceful and quiet atmosphere. There's not alot of services around such as (stores, gas stations, restuarants, bars, etc.) but we like that. We like to read and we like to hike. We did alot of both. We must have hiked 30 miles. All of it through eye stunningly beautiful terrian. We saw alot of wild life (bobcat, deer, eagles, seals, raccoons, etc.).This is the first time we have ever rented a house, and we liked it. The Carter house is the least expensive rental on the ocean side of Hwy 1. All the houses on this side of the hwy seem to have tremendous views of the ocean and the Point Arena light house. This one was no exception. The house was very clean and well equipped. We felt it served all our needs very adequatly. After all, its a rental house not a hotel.My only complaints would be the famous smoking fire place and the couch. I think the problem with the fireplace was the wet fire wood. The wind keeps blowing the tarp off the wood and then it gets rained on. I found some dryer pieces on the bottom of the wood pile, split them into smaller pieces and built the fires in the back of the fire box. I had no more smoke problem after that. The couch (which is also a hide a bed) seems to have sunk. Or worn out. Or something. Uncomfortable to sit on, but ok to lie on.We will definitely come back. But next time I think we will spend a little more money and get a house right on the bluff. Try that out. I would recommend Irish Beach vacation rentals to anyone who is looking for a nice quiet and peaceful coastal get away. Stayed for 3 days in November, 2011 My husband, me and our 2 dogs arrived late and had difficulty finding the house in the dark. There were no specific directions to the house, just an address. It was completely dark with no outside lighting, so we had to empty the car and walk the path in the dark, even after turning on the porch light. The house is very charming on the outside although there is no landscaping, fencing or furniture. Everything in the house is dated and/or very tacky; i.e. large poster of Mel Gibson in dining room, and faded family photos in old frames in bedroom. Uncomfortable bed. Windows were rusted and did not open. Fireplace smoked so unable to use. On a positive note, picture windows in living room with window seat was awesome. Hot tub was extremely clean and pleasant--not very private though!With a new paint job and some new appliances, etc, it would be worth the money paid; otherwise, we will stay elsewhere. The reasons for the poor rating was on the second morning a dead rodent was found in the burner on the stove top and a message was left at the rental agency to have the rodent removed (never received a response) and the two large burners on the range didn't work. The hot tub is great - there is a rotted piece of wood on the deck that broke through and a bump to the elbow was received. The property is very quiet with privacy and very comfortable amenities. The place was clean and stocked with amenities; we especially enjoyed the puzzles we found in the game closet. Don't miss out on the CARTER HOUSE at Irish Beach ! Gina C. from Santa Rosa, California recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in March, 2011 This cozy home provides a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean with the Point Arena Lighthouse in the distance. Deer in the front and back of the house each morning is also a plus! Allowing Pets is yet another plus (our beagles love it) and this place is squeaky clean and provides so many extras: firewood, spices, games, puzzles, things to do in the area, of course the private beach and let's not forget the hot tub that overlooks the ocean as well ! This was our 2nd time at the Carter House and we would come back again and again. Great if you have kids too, as there is ladder that that leads to a small 2nd story loft - our kids loved having a secret place of their own to sleep and yet it overlooks the living room so they're not isolated. There is a master bedroom, and a sofa sleeper in addition to the loft. I love having the full size washer and dryer too, you can wash while you're there and go home with a suitcase full of clean clothes. You can't go wrong at the CARTER HOUSE and Irish Beach does a great job managing and maintaining the property. We were looking for serenity and we got it. The ocean is breath taking. Point Arena is an excellent destination. The seascapes are beautiful. The deer in the yard certainly added to our communication with nature along with all the birds and seals. We took our own food and only ate out once in Fort Bragg the day we rode the Skunk Train. We stayed there only 3 days in the off season. Be careful because the extra fees will almost double the cost of the rent. Overall we had a most enjoyable experience and we would recommend the Carter House to any couple needing some alone quality time. However, this particular property was a little far from the ocean compared to some of the other properties. The place was very clean and had all the amenities that you could want or need. The couch was terrible to the point that you needed to place several pillows on top of it to even make it slightly comfortable.Having said that, the location is rather pretty, the private beach access is VERY nice and the kitchen is functional.At the very least the house needs some better functioning furniture, if not some upodated decorations. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2010 Let's start with the positive, the property was very quiet and peaceful. You could hear the ocean, birds, as well as see the physical ocean and the coastline. The private beach was close and beautiful. The fireplace had plenty of wood and the spa was terrific. Thank goodness for the spa, or we would have left after the first night. The bed was as hard as plywood and unbearable. We did leave earlier than expected after the second night of our stay because of it. The living room couch was just as uncomfortable. We realize that this is a rental and not to expect perfection, but this was the hardest and most uncomfortable bed we've ever slept on. I feel that amount of money charged and amount of reservations booked for this property far exceeds the cost of upgrading the couch and bed. Finally, we were a little confused about the Mel Gibson poster and why it was there, but once we visited the Point Arena Lighthouse we figured it out. Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us, but to have us back or refer your home you will have to make some updates. The bed was way too hard and we didn't sleep well on it. We brought the foam twin mattresses down from the loft and put them on top of the bed, which helped, but only a little. Secondly, there was no window shade in the master bedroom. That made it a little uncomfortable changing, getting ready or anything else in that room. Loved the hot tub and the fact that you could see the ocean from it. Not a lot of privacy while in the tub, but the neighboring houses were empty during our stay. Thanks for a memorable getaway! The bbq functioned but was rusted out so that rain water got into the inside even with the lid on. And it's really time to invest in something other than a 20 + year old 19 inch TV. Quiet Little Hamlet - Perfect for R & R! Phil & Debra M. from Santa Rosa, CA. recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in August, 2009 This trip was a surprise anniversary trip for my husband. I made the initial reservation 3 months ahead of time and sent a check for half of the rental, as instructed. They never received the check. I sent a second one, AFTER paying to cancel the first, and yet again, they didn't receive it either! I had to pay to cancel that check too. I ended up having to pay by credit card, which I hadn't wanted to do. Other than that fiasco, we enjoyed our stay. The window in the BR and one in the LR, plus the front door didn't have screens so we had to keep them closed. It was a beautiful warm week and whales were abundant, but we couldn't listen to the whales or ocean as we had to keep the windows closed to keep out the bugs. Also, the previous guest must have had a long haired white dog because there was dog hair everywhere, including on our clothing, haha. They should instruct their cleaners to vacuum the furniture. BUT, it was very peaceful, quiet and Irish Beach itself was wonderful. Lots of walks and reading. Beautiful setting! Stayed for 6 days in September, 2008 I visited the northern coast of CA based on the advice of a friend and it evolved into the best vacation ever! The location is ideal, being in close enough proximity to attractions and restaurants but enclosed in a quiet haven that oozes rest and relaxation. Being so near the ocean is a wonderful respite from the beauty of the desert. Nature is really at your doorstep here as well, from the ocean vistas to the deer roaming the meadows to the playful sea lions on the beach. The Carter home was cozy and comfortable and though I arrived on a dark and foggy night, the instructions awaiting me were clear and the home lit for my pending arrival. The hot tub was wonderful under a magnificent starry sky, made all the more wonderful with the sound of the ocean in the distance. It had been years since I had so deeply slept and rested and I look forward to my return very soon. Perhaps I need a month's vacation this time. The facilities at the house were excellent- oven stove, refrigerator, dishwasher all sparkling and useful. If you are palning a long stay and not eating out all the time, you can easily pick up most items in Manchester (4 miles south). Otherwise bring a few items to get started with and pick up the rest when you visit Fort Bragg (a Safeway- 30 miles north). If you have children (that will sleep in the loft) be aware that it is a steep climb up the ladder (and no sleepwalkers).Quiet, relaxing, wonderful neighborhoods to walk around and a huge beach (but not necessarily for swimming- this is the north coast, remember).Many exceptional day trips up down and inland from the coast. Hiking (in state parks, artist shops, the Skunk Train, coastal fishing and so many wonderful restaurants at all price ranges- what a wonderful place to stay.
