MAUNALOA SHORES 403 is the perfect, relaxing home away from home in Hilo, HI and better than any Hilo hotel room! Unit #403 is a comfortable two bedroom condo with a full galley kitchen and full bathroom. The owner has remodeled and decorated the condo beautifully! Cool ceramic tiles are on the floors throughout. There are ceiling fans to move the cool tradewinds, just open the lanai to the ocean and enjoy. The oceanfront bedroom has a comfortable Queen-sized bed and ceiling fan. The front bedroom has a Full sized bed, ceiling fan, book cases and a small desk if you must work while visiting Hawaii.

The owner thoughtfully decorated the condo with comfortable, island style furniture and original art work. There is a great bar counter with 3 stools in the kitchen, a small dining table and seating for 4 in the dining area and additional eating area for up to six on the lanai. Your meals will never taste better than after a day in the Pacific Ocean. If you can tear yourself away from the ocean sights, there is a flat screen tv and wireless high-speed internet provided FREE of charge.

SWIMMING AND SNORKELING ARE JUST STEPS AWAY. You have a choice of the on-site swimming pool or take a short walk to Carlsmith Park next door for a dip in the ocean. The lagoons create calm swimming areas and provide protection from the surf. The 4-mile stretch of different swimming coves in this area (called Keaukaha) is a wonderful location to introduce your children to the ocean.

THE MAUNALOA SHORES CONDOMINIUM COMPLEX HAS A SECURED ELEVATOR and you have an assigned parking space. You'll find a coin-operated washer/dryer on every floor of the complex for your convenience. This is a non-smoking condo and complex, per Hawaii state law.

Year-round rate range is $85 - $215 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Monthly rate range is $1850 - $2200. Cleaning fee ranges from $105 to $120, also depending upon party size.

Property Reviews
Loved swimming with the Honu.
Galen H. from Louisville, KY recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in May, 2014
This is a very spacious condo with a great view of the bay and ocean. We greatly enjoyed our stay. Only two cons and they are related. The condo does not have a/c (a lot of properties in the islands don't) but the cross breeze kept it comfortable. Of course having the windows open all the time also let all of the noise from campers/partiers on the beach in. All in all, a great place to stay and we plan to go back.

It was my husband & I plus my adult son & his girlfriend. We had plenty of space & we LOVED the lagoon & swimming w/ the turtles basically in our back yard!! We stayed at 3 different places on Hawaii & I think that this was my favorite!! Of course it really helped that the weather was beautiful while we were only rained the last day, when we were leaving!!

Location is Key
Robert C. from Atlanta, GA recommends this property.
Stayed for 4 days in October, 2013
Had a very wonderful experience with this home. The location is everything. The lagoon and beach park directly behind the condo was amazing. You could spend an entire day there. We came across two beautiful sea turtles, lots of friendly mongoose, pools of tropical fish, amazing tropical plants and flowers, choirs of frogs, and awesome geckos right out side the back door. Great resturaunts, a walmart, grocery stores, shopping, downtown are all less then maybe 15 minutes away. Eat at Ponds it's down the the street and amazing. Rainforest,Rainbow Falls, volcanoes, black sand beaches are all about 45 minutes away or less. The locals around the condo are all very pleasant and eager to share their stories of Hawaii with you. The condo itself is great. Our wifi connection did not work so you may want to prepare for that just in case. Phone service is very sketchy inside the condo (sprint). Also there is no AC to my knowledge BUT the Hawaiian breeze kept the condo cool and we never felt uncomfortable. If you're like me and enjoy a comfort sleep stop by walmart and pick up some pillows the ones at the condo are sufficient but I just enjoy fluffier pillows lol. Now all the basic you need are more than provided for at the condo. Blender, dishes, silverware, blankets, towels you name it. But bring snorkel gear trust me you will want it once you see the lagoon. My booking process was very easy and had great communication. Check in and check out was very efficient as well. Book this location you will not regret it.

Everything was perfect. Nice, quiet place providing interesting info about the Island, where to eat, what to do. We didn't get access to Internet but must admit we didn't try very hard ... not so important when you listen to the sea I guess!

This was my 1st time in Hawaii. It has been a dream of mine forever to go not only see Hawaii but be immersed in local Hawaii not vacation ville. Maunaloa Shores gave me everything I have wanted and more. The condo sits right on a local beach park with very little tourists. You can go out in the morning and the evening and have solitude or enjoy the people having fun in the afternoons with picnics and fun in the water. They 1st day in the water we met the 1st giant sea turtle and from there were able to swim along and witness dozens of them. They are not shy and will come right up to you. a word of advice - get some snorkel equipment so you can see all of the lovely tropical fish and do not walk on the rocks as they are covered in urchins and we witnessed a couple of people get barbs stuck in their feet. There is plenty of sandy bottomed areas to have fun as well. Another thing it has is a jungle with trails all through it that wind its way to different areas of the ocean that are absolutely breathtaking and with cliffs of lava rock and striking blue ocean and you seriously will not see another sole on some of your hikes through it! Just amazing. OK enough about the park - But it was a perfect location in my families opinion. The condo itself was cozy and clean and had all of the dishes and linens we needed. We did not stay indoors much so it definitely served its purpose on all accounts. I do have to say that they put a lot of safe guards in people entering the building as well so we were not worried about our things in the least. I did read up on the reviews before we came and yes it is an older building and if you like the shiny and resort feel then book a resort. I on the other hand will continue to come here and wrap my arms around the real Hawaii and the amazing nature it has to offer.

A guest from Davis, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 4 days in July, 2013
It was great to have such a lovely lagoon in the 'backyard' of the building. Didn't see any turtles. 5-10 minutes to Hilo airport, downtown, and nearby restaurants. #403 had a few shelves of books of interest for children, adult and visitors to the islands as well as nice d├ęcor of art pieces throughout. Minor considerations include 1) no AC but 3 ceiling fans placed in the living/dining area, and the 2 bedrooms kept us cool, 2) no kitchen dish towels available, and 3) a larger ice water decanter in the refrigerator.

A Stay At An Artist's Home in 'Paradise'
Marilyn T. from Albuquerque, NM recommends this property.
Stayed for 11 days in September, 2012
Everything was as described on the rental documents, e.g. parking, key, etc. The home has had flooring upgrade recently (?) and is attractive, especially the original designs in the bath and hallway. Many of the Artist's paintings were displayed. Furnishing was eclectic and mostly comfortable. Internet access was good and helpful. There is a vast collection of original pottery - very nice, except it occupied all the shelf space. The view was SUPERB - looking above the canopy trees over the CarlSmith Beach Park, which adjoins the property. Swimming was available in the well-maintained pool or in the ocean at the beach park, anad many residents took advantage of that. Two bedrooms were nice, beds were adequate. The problem was a strong odor of pet urine in the front bedroom that I could not resolve. Otherwise a delightful experience. Thanks to all of you involved in arranging this opportunity. Mahalo

Building Shabby, Unit Adequate, Would not stay here again
A guest from San Diego, CA does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 3 days in May, 2012
My husband and I stayed 7 days in Kona, then spent 3 days in Hilo to enjoy the attractions on the east side of the island. When we got to the building, the elevator was smelly, building was old and shabby. Check-in was easy as it was self check-in with a lock box. When we got to the unit Maunaloa Shores #403, door was difficult to open, unit smelly despite windows being left opened for us. The unit was very clean, had enough linen and toiletries. Although unit is described as 2 bedrooms and can accommodate 6 people I don't see how 6 or even 4 people could stay comfortably. I would not feel comfortable using the smaller bedroom as there was no privacy. The window coverings in both bedrooms were made of a straw like material (think of a straw beach mat with the straw not densely tied together) that could not be adjusted, only lifted or lowered. My husband went outside into the community hallway and could see nearly everything inside that bedroom even with the lights off. We only used that room for storage of our suitcases and kept that door closed for privacy during our entire stay. The same window covering was on the larger bedroom that faced the bay. Again there was no way to adjust the window covering so there was no sleeping-in during vacation, when the sun came up we woke up. The other reason I don't think 6 people could share this unit is the door of the only bathroom was made of frosted glass, not completely see through, but somewhat. There was no AC, but 3 ceiling fans. We had to keep the windows opened at night and ceiling fan on to be comfortable. Surf and noise from frogs did not bother me, but the sound of the window dressings hitting the window (due to air moving from the ceiling fan) kept me up. No dishwasher, no drying rack for the dishes you wash by hand, but 4 cutting boards. Only TV is in the living room.

Stayed for a month. Great view of the park. Good value. Was surprised there was no dishwasher in the unit. Also, the Lani table and chairs were quite 'flimsy'. Bought some folding beach chairs at Walmart and also used them when we went to the park and other places as well. Overall, a very good rental experience. I had no need to contact the property management company once we arrived in Hilo.

pictures were deceptive because overall building was moldy
A guest from North Vancouver, BC does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 4 days in February, 2012
Although the swimming cove outside was nice we were very unhappy with the state of the building. The pictures were deceptive - the building is horribly moldy and smelly. When I called about the WIFI no effort at all was made to solve the problem of logging on. Generally a bad experience, we left a night early to find a better place for our final night in Hawaii.

While we cannot do anything about the exterior of the condo building, we do insure that the units we manage are impeccably cleaned and cared for, which they all are. The condo was immaculate, very comfortable and well-supplied. It is conveniently located near Hilo, groceries, gas, the farmers' market etc. The beach park outside is beautiful with crystal clear water, not crowded, and even a very large, very inquisitive turtle.
