NEWLY REMODELED AND TASTEFULLY DECORATED, 508 is one of the nicest condos at Maunaloa Shores. Why stay in a hotel when for about the same rate you can have 2 bedrooms, a new kitchen, and your own private outdoor lanai less than 5 miles from downtown? Start with a bit of Tommy Bahama, throw in an Asian splash or two, and add some teak and bamboo furnishings and accents and you have just described the decor of this very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay in Hilo.
THE OWNERS WANTED TO HAVE THE NICEST CONDO for their guests, and they kept comfort in mind with lots of seating, good lighting, and upgraded amenities including new kitchen appliances, cable TV, DVD player, and high-speed Internet access. You can keep the sliding glass door from the living area to the lanai open all day long because the lanai (balcony) is completely screened, extending your living space with seating for 4 while looking out at the view. The owner's daughter loves animals, so the second bedroom with twin beds is themed with carved giraffes, dolphins, and other exotic creatures.
ON MOST DAYS YOU CAN SEE STEAMING KILAUEA, our active volcano, from your front door! You can swim in the large pool at Maunaloa Shores or next door at Carlsmith Park. The park is a popular place to get into the water in protected lagoons and experience the ocean in Hawaii in a different way from the beaches. It is a very picturesque setting and we never get tired of the beauty this place has to offer.
THE MAUNALOA SHORES CONDOMINIUM COMPLEX has a secured elevator and you have an assigned parking space. There is a coin-operated washer/dryer available on every floor of the complex for your convenience.
Year-round rate range is $85 - $175 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Monthly rate range is $1850 - $2100. Cleaning fee is $95
Bedding Configuration: 1 Queen, 2 Twin
Additional Features:
* Convenience: Secured elevators, Coin-Op Washers/Dryers, Nearby Movie Theatres, Nearby Grocery, Nearby Restaurants, Nearby Banks & ATMs, Nearby Medical Services, Golf Course

Love this Unit. Ongoing Bldg Repairs. Minor fixes in unit needed. A guest from Honolulu, HI recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2013 This is my second stay here. Residents and manager are very friendly. Only thing is the pool was not operational on this last visit and does not look like it will be in the near future. The bulding is undergoing some renovations and there are signs up warning of dust and noise, althought nothing was happening while we were there. The ceiling fan in the living room did not work, the shower head was cracked and the baseboard to the master bedroom was loose. All have been reported to management co. |

condo by the sea Reviewed by: A guest recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in December, 2012 Overall, the condo was clean, enjoyed the screened in porch which expanded the living space, wifi worked well, good cross ventilation even if there was no air conditioning, only 1 restaurant across the street (Seaside Restaurant - prettygood for Hilo), Considerations when staying here: building itself is not well maintained and in need of repairs, pool not well maintained, no dishwasher, laundry facilities at the end of the floor are in very poor condition (!), bathroom in need of remodeling especially the showerhead, dishes in the cabinet were dirty. Property Manager Response: Response from Aloha Coast Realty, LLC/Hawaii Holiday Vac. Rentals Thank you for your review. Since we do not manage the building, only the unit we will handle what we can which is to notify the housekeepers about the cabinet contents and we may be able to upgrade the shower head. Clean, efficient apartment, but on the other side of the tracks. A guest from Lawrenceville, NJ recommends this property. Stayed for 1 days in August, 2011 Clean and basic, this apartment has the basic amenities you need to clean up and keep your stuff while you explore the island. Cinder block walls, no air conditioning - which would be ok because of the island breezes, but not safe to leave windows open in the front bedroom, very outdated bathroom (mildew, horrible shower head). Glad we only stayed for one night instead of our original three nights planned. Rental company was wonderful and very accomodating, so would certainly book through them again. However, the area where the apartment is pretty seedy (and this coming from someone who works in NYC and hice lived in Jersey City, NJ), did not feel it was safe to take a walk or run or even explore the neighboring beach, clearly there is a reason that the complex gets locked up at night...which was my first indication that this was not the best place to be traveling alone with two children. Wish this was not our last experience on the big island. If you could just transport the apartment... |

Perfect base camp A guest from Cary, NC recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2011 Mauna Loa Shores was a perfect base camp for exploring the big island. Great location - we loved the secluded lagoon (though we didn't see any sea turtles), and had a great meal at the Seaside restaurant across the street. The apartment was clean and nicely furnished, the master has a GREAT view, and we had all the amenities we needed to cook, pack lunches, and relax at the end of the day. |

A+ for Mauna Loa Shores 508 A guest from Honolulu, HI recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in July, 2011 Our stay here was very comfortable and relaxing. The view was great, you could see the tidepools next door at Carlsmith Park. The kitchen was well-stocked and clean. Location was perfect! Just a few minutes away from the airport, Ken's Pancake House and even a Walmart and Safeway was conveniently close by to pick up necessities. Downtown Hilo and the mall were close by too. There was a treasure trove of supplies in the closets. Flashlights and lanterns if you went out at night or visited the lava tubes, boogie boards, snorkel gear, and even fishnets for the beach or the tidepools right next door at Carlsmith park. We were lucky enough to see a turtle there! We're definately coming back next year! |

Excellent stay at Mauna Loa Shores A guest from San Mateo, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2011 This apartment has a wonderful view of the sea. It's very relaxing to sit on the screened lanai and watch the waves. It was easy to be at home here. We played cards (provided in the house) and walked the jungly trail along the shore. I highly recommend it. The only caveat is that total clean freaks may not like the lived-in quality of the place. For example, the couch is a little worn on the side. None of that bothered me because the place is clean, comfy but not cluttered. And did I mention the wonderful view! |

Nancy L. from Newburyport, Massachusetts recommends this property.
Stayed for 8 days in May, 2011 The property contact person was very helpful and responsive, even when we needed to contact her after working hours.I would have appreciated more of the minor amenities one would have at a hotel, e.g., additional toilet paper, kleenex, etc. Also, the towels were old and tired, more like in a personal linen closet than a vacation rental. These were minimal drawbacks to our overall experience. |

Perfect place for us Sarah D. from Tetonia, ID recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in December, 2010 We are so pleased that we picked this condo for the Hilo leg of our vacation. It was perfect for our family of three (including a very energetic 2 y.o. boy). We actually appreciated the screening of the patio as it added another safety barrier for our boy, in the off chance he may have wanted to climb on the table or chairs (which he never did) when we looked the other way. The kitchen was better equipped than expected and had all of the necessities. It was not "fancy" but so very comfortable, and the location being walking distance to the beautiful lagoons was a real highlight. Driving to town occasionally was a breeze, and we didn't need to much since we cooked most meals. Thank you for opening your wonderful condo to travelers such as us! |

SF Giants Win World Series and we're in Hilo! Christine M. from Sonoma, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2010 The people who own this have truly made this a place you'd recommend and come back to. They had books about the island, restaurant menus, the lagoons out back were fabulous and filled with honu's, the kitchen was well stocked. I really have no complaints, except in the bathroom. I don't care who you are, seeing mold is a turn off so I would either wash or change the shower curtain liner and bath mat more often. Truly, other than that it was great. One thing I would say to future guests is to look in every drawer and closet to acquaint themselves with what's there because there's really everything, from floor fans to kids sand buckets. I would absolutely recommend this place to someone else and in fact recommend Hilo over Kona! I would also tell people that they have cable which was very important to us watching the SF Giants win the World Series!!!!! |

Moana Loa Shores David & Shameen M. from Boya, Australia does not recommend this property. Stayed for 4 days in May, 2010 Overall external appearance of property is tired and dated. Unit itself was nicely furnished and relaxing. Some rusting outdoor furniture needs attention. We were only 2 so unit was good. A bit small if more than 2 people. Pool was not open at times but that did not worry us. Be warned that nightlife in jungle at night is extremely noisy. Frogs, insects etc necessitating us to close windows and doors to deaden noise. In summary, the unit was generally suitable and comfortable for us. Would like to see unit advertised as one price and not have all extra inclusions such as insurance, cleaning etc added when making the reservation. |

Big Island Condo - The condo master bedroom was great, and the lanai helped cool the condo (no air conditioning). Very close to A guest from Courtenay, British Columbia recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in December, 2009 Front door screen needed repair, which might be why we saw three cockroaches in the kitchen. The building was VERY secure, and the pool clean, and near the shore park. The second bedroom was not suited for adults (very small dresser drawers/shelves,and the bedframes were VERY noisy). That bedroom faced the traffic (chickens and motorcycles at 6:00.) Four adults and one bath! A plus - lots of towels, kitchen supplies, good closet space, great TV and DVD player, good living area seating, a good fan and lighting, very nice upgraded flooring, but only two chairs for the small dinette table, so, for four, we needed to eat out on the lanai. Overall, the condo is fine for a couple, but not only a 3 out of 5 for two couples, and much better than the first impression from the exterior. |

The building is a dump but the apartment is very nice. Small kitchen but was okay for the two of us. Easy access to Hilo and eastern side of Big Island. About 45 minutes to Volcanoes NP. Quiet and no parking issues since your reserved spot is right in front. We loved eating out on the net enclosed lanai with no bugs. Stayed for 5 days in November, 2009 The unit was very nicely decorated and was quiet when we stayed. The building is older but again the unit is very nice. There were Turtles in the lagoon next to the property which is good for swiming.. Would have been nice to have the exact address of the key pickup location and the Mauna Loa Shores. The instructions to pick up the key are from the Hilo Airport but we flew into Kona and drove to Hilo. The instructions were not a lot of help. Our GPS would have worked fine if we had an address. |

Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover . . . A guest from Virginia Beach, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2009 When you first drive up to the Mauna Loa Shores Condo building, you'll think it's a dive. But once you see the interior of unit 508, your mind will be completely changed. The photos on the website are accurate. Great furnishings, tasteful decor, beautiful view from the screened lanai, plenty of supplies, convenient location, nice pool, easy access to private beaches. It's everything you could want and more. We spent more time away from the condo than in it. Here are several helpful suggestions for improvement: lanai door and front kitchen windows need locks; we could not unlock right window in master bedroom; not all light switches turned on a light or a fan--a bit confusing; make sure all light bulbs are working; not all towels/linens felt freshly laundered; bad odor from bathroom drains. Please don't misinterpret this review. These suggestions are meant to be helpful. We truly enjoyed our stay at this condo and are glad that we had the opportunity to use it. |
