MAUNA LOA SHORES #304 is a colorful, comfortable and affordable one bedroom, one bath oceanfront condo on the third floor of the six floor condo building. The owners welcome you to their fun and colorful Hawaiian home. They have provided everything you'll need to cook and dine in the unit. There is a world reknowned Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays in downtown Hilo, just a 10 minute drive from Mauna Loa Shores where you can find great local food.

CARLSMITH OCEANFRONT PARK is just next door to the condo and offers a unique Big Island experience: swimming with Honu (sea turtles). These exotic animals can be spotted from the oceanfront lanai of unit #304 and then you can go down the elevator and swim with them! Please be kind to our sea friends and look but don't touch. There are also tropical fish to be seen and sun to soak up. Popular Volcanoes National Park is an easy 45 minute drive from Hilo and offers breathtaking views of the lava when it is flowing.


THE BEDROOM IN #304 HAS A COMFORTABLE BRAND NEW QUEEN SIZED BED and lots of storage for clothes if you're staying longer than a few days. The Full sleeper sofa in the living room is available for a third guest. The owner's have also offered FREE highspeed internet service, cable TV, DVD player, telephone and many other touches of home. The full bathroom has a shower over the tub and is fully tiled.

THE MAUNALOA SHORES CONDOMINIUM COMPLEX has a large swimming pool for guests, a secured elevator and you have an assigned parking space. You'll find a coin-operated washer/dryer on every floor of the complex for your convenience. We are happy to confirm only non-smokers in this condo.

Year-round rate range is $80 - $175 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Monthly rate range is $1850 - $2100. Cleaning fee is $95

Dear Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals,Thank you for contacting me regarding my recent stay at Mauna Loa Shores, Unit 304 located in Hilo, Hawai'i. I had trouble checking-in and caused inconvenience to several residents. The information I needed was on page 4 of an attachment to one of five email documents and the check-in information was embedded in ?Driving Directions, From Hilo Airport? on page 4 of the attachment. I did read ?Check-in Procedure? and was puzzled that there were no instructions. ?When I arrived at Mauna Loa Shores on Easter Sunday I was surprised that there was no office and no one to ask how to check-in. A kind resident of Mauna Loa Shores saw that I was having some difficulty and told me about the lock boxes - that I needed to retrieve my key from one. I looked thru the electronic document at ?Check-in Procedure? and didn?t see anything about the lock box. The kind resident then took me to the unit of a friend on the 5th floor to ask for help. She told me that others had had the same check-in problem, and gave me the telephone number of Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals. Denise at HHVR very patiently told me where to look on the 4th page of the attachment to find the lock-box ID and combination for Unit 304. Crisis over. After that everything was lovely. I can offer some suggestions which, I believe, will help future guests, even if they are using electronic documents:1. Include the physical address, 1875 Kalanianaole, as well as the Unit Number on every communication.2. Include a photograph of the building. I just snipped this one from Google: (photo)It?s not as pretty as Carlsmith?s lagoon but it would be helpful.3. Include the: a. lock-box number, b. lock-box combination, c. check-in instructions, and d. your phone number ALL under ?Check-in Procedure? and place it near the top of the document so guests will see it.

Our stay at Maunaloa Shores 304 was a wonderful experience. We were very comfortable and pleased with the accomodations. The view and access to the lagoon and nearby park made visiting the ocean easy. We appreciated the security and felt right at home. The unit was clean and comfy. We would recommend Maunaloa Shores to our friends when they come to Hilo for a stay.

While not fancy, this place was clean and had everything we needed and was great value for the $80/night. There were a few tiny ants inside but nothing that made our stay uncomfortable. Go in the ocean from the protected entrance just beside the condo!

We had a little trouble figuring out the lockbox arrangement so we could get in. Management is apparently not available 24/7. The key that they said fits the gate actually doesn't, but we found the one that did. The decor is somewhat dated but everything is clean and in good condition. We would like to have been a little closer to town, but being so close to the water makes up for it. We would stay again. Go to Ken's for breakfast. The restaurant across the street from MLS closes at 9:30 pm. Hilo is a much quieter place than Honolulu!

This was our 3rd annual stay in this same condo. Location is great, cost effective, management very cooperative. The condo needs a few minor repairs and then it would be top notch.

The area was great; near some beautiful swimming areas. However, the condo had an old-musty smell. I had to air it out with fans on high for a good couple of hours. Otherwise, it was comfortable.

Missing some essential furniture

This didn't work for us. The bed was so soft that even when we put it on the floor (!!!) it was still too soft. We then tried the sofa mattress and it was soft and so we spent 6 days sleeping on the floor. There is no table to eat at, just a very small cocktail table on the lanai and 2 very wobbly small plastic tables to use. You could sit on benches (no backs) at the kitchen counter but why would you do that in beautiful Hawaii. The chair at the desk was a plastic lawn chair, not appropriate to sit at a desk. All in all, this apartment needs new furniture to qualify for the price. Location is great; view is great but if you can't sleep or eat or sit, what are you paying for????

The unit we rented was a one bedroom with a balcony that faced a lagoon. The condo building itself is an older high rise. It was nothing very fancy, but was perfect for our purposes of having a base for exploring the area and Volcanos NP. No air conditioning, but we would not have used it anyway. The unit was very clean and well equipped for cooking. The airport and a large shopping center were only about 2 miles away. There were several large green sea turtles in the lagoon and lots of frogs making noise at night (bring earplugs). Only suggestions: Rental agent should supply a small map showing where grocery shopping is located as well as the parking space that should be used for the unit. (We happened to meet a resident when we arrived who told us these things).

Beautiful View of Hilo Bay

With its view of Hilo Bay from the lanai, this rental is a beautiful place to stay except for the very uncomfortable mattress on the bed! It's difficult to enjoy the beautiful area with an aching back. We have two maintenance suggestions. First, replace the valve in the toilet tank to prevent the waste of water draining constantly and second, replace the seal under the entrance door to stop the little critters from free access.
