Resort: Large city, in a busy, central, convenient position. All shops, restaurants etc. in the resort. Access: motorway E75. For arrivals by plane: airport HER (0). In Katalagari, a traditional village, there are two small markets where you can find all you may need eventually. There is also a traditional cafe at the church square. If you ask for it they can even cook a meal for you. This area is famous for the grapes fields and Archanes (3 km) is the wine main producer of the island since the antiquity (ancient minoan settlement wich today has around 5.000 people). From this village it starts the road to the famous minoic ruins of Knossos, 10 km. going back to Heraklion. Katalagari is a small village of around 200 people, facing the mountains of Lassithi (the highest one, Dicti, is 2.148m high) on the East, therefore is the village of the raising sun. The use of stone in some of the streets and even in the small theater, together with its peacefull atmosfere makes it a unique starting point to know the real cretan soul. To go to the closest sandy beach you have to take back the way to the airport and keep going to the east, behind it: Karteros, 20 minuts drive from Katalagari.
