More on Hamburg and Its Surroundings:
Hamburg, the Hansa city located on the banks of the Elbe river, to most of its residents is the best place to live. Water is everywhere; it is said that Hamburg has more bridges than Venice. The Köhlbrandbrücke at the harbor is probably one of the largest and best-known among them. The Elbe has many side arms, there is the Innenalster and Aussenalster, lakes, channels… Hamburg’s water bodies can be discovered in many ways, such as the “classic” harbor boat tour, slow boat tours on the Alster or paddling on the many smaller and larger channels. Staying in Hamburg, you should head out to discover Hamburg’s waterways at least once.

Going on a city trip to Hamburg, you probably want to see sights such as the Michel (St. Michael’s church) and the harbor, but not only those… there’s lots to see! The Mönckebergstrasse and the Spitalerstrasse running parallel to it are amongst Germany’s most popular shopping miles, great for window shopping along the countless stores, boutiques and malls. From the main train station to the beautiful Jungfernstieg at the Binnenalster, where the shopping center “Europapassage” opened recently, one can undertake a veritable shopping marathon.

If you still have some energy left in the evening, there is also the nightlife of Hamburg, which is always eventful. The Reeperbahn, the “sinful mile,” is probably one of the best known of all entertainment streets. Its atmosphere is quite unique and should definitely be experienced. The clubs, discos, pubs and bars are favorites among tourists and locals alike. The Schanzenviertel (or simply “Schanze”) quarter has become a part of town frequented by many creatures of the night, too; Hamburg’s musical productions, such as Tarzan or Lion King, are popular as well. A vacation apartment is ideal for exploring this exciting metropolis independently and at one’s own pace, but also great for families. For the latter, attractions such as the rather recent miniature land in the scenic Speicherstadt are interesting, as is the Hamburg Dungeon for the elder and braver ones. Other “classic” sights are the “Willkommhöft” in which all ships of a certain size are greeted with the national anthem of their home countries, the old Elb tunnel of Hamburg, Hagenbeck’s animal park…. but the lush surrounding countryside is also worth a visit: the “Old Country” (Altes Land) or the wild animal park Schwarze Berge in the South are nice destinations for excursions.

You can also take things more leisurely. With the summer sun beating down on Michel, Alster and Elbe, whoever is able to do so gets outside to enjoy the summer in cafés, in green surroundings, or, of course, by the water. A highlight for a perfect beach day aren’t just the classic Elbe beaches, such as they are to be found in Blankenese, but also the beach clubs of Hamburg. There, it is easy to lie under palm trees, sip a cool drink and listen to chilled-out music, and watch large ships float by on the Elbe…

The Hansa city Hamburg is not just pretty, it points to a centuries-long and exciting history, documents an economic success story and architectural accomplishments. Hamburg is the most important German harbor and the second most important commercial harbor in Europe.

Hamburg Altstadt, the historic core of the city, was originally planned as a complex surrounded by a ring wall by Charlemagne in the 9th century. There, on the site of the present St. Petri church, the city’s first church was erected. The old town, which together with the “new town” forms the inner city of Hamburg, is shaped by its churches. In the historic Deichstrasse, the narrow streets and old patrician houses have survived in their original flair, giving the appearance of an open air museum.

The harbor of Hamburg, which nowadays covers an area of seven thousand hectares, also got its start in the ninth century. It is used by ocean-going vessels which , together with the enormous harbor cranes and the restored historic ships, produce an imposing and unique sight. Historic monuments, works of art in open air, museums and buildings protected as architectural heritage abound.

St. Pauli is one piece of Hamburg history which one can even walk on. On almost one kilometer, this most famous of entertainment miles offers countless bars, pubs, discos, music and night clubs, which attract 25 million visitors per year.

Hamburg is also home to some 60 museums, more than 100 music clubs and more than 60 theaters, and has earned itself acclaim as a city of musicals. The beautiful parks of Hamburg are as well known as they are popular. Only one highlight amongst many are the “colorful water-light-concerts” which one can admire every evening. Great memories will also be gained from a walk at the Hamburg Alster, the city lake surrounded by magnificent park landscapes and pompous facades, which gave the city its moniker “Venice of the North.” Going on a tour with the “White Fleet” along Alster channels is just as great an experience as the harbor boat tour. The main city landmark, the church St. Michaelis, is hard to miss, for its beautiful spire can be seen from just about anywhere in Hamburg’s inner city.

The city impresses its visitors at every step, but does not overburden with impressions. Rather, one feels comfortable and at home, thinking that a return would be a good idea.

More travel info about Hamburg: Hamburg is a major port city situated on the Elbe River in northern Germany. It is Germany's second-largest city with 1,740,000 inhabitants. Hamburg has always been an international city, and has been called "The Gate to the World." Hamburg is one of the most important media hubs in Germany. Half of the nation's newspapers and magazines have their roots in Hamburg. The city offers a large variety of entertainment and cultural activities. A few key points of interest in Hamburg include the Moenckebergstrasse, one of the main retail streets, and Hamburg's impressive city hall ("Rathaus"), built in 1897 out of sandstone in the neo-Renaissance style. The Hamburg Dungeon is a live-action presentation of the "darker times" of Hamburg. The city is home to the Miniatur Wunderland, the world's largest model railway layout. Landungsbruecken is the most touristy part of Hamburg's harbor. And while there are a number of activities you can do on the water, you can also walk under the Elbe River through the Alter Elbtunnel.
