Nice Location but unresponsive front desk staff Jared S. from St Petersburg, FL does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2012 We really enjoyed our trip to Palm Island the year before (in spite of a Red Tide bloom!) We believe Palm Island has a great location and facilities but were very disappointed during our return visit recently, mainly due to the customer service of the front desk. On our second day we lost power for about 6 hours (which we understand things happen sometimes), but the front desk staff when asked several times would not offer any help. We received no indication that the staff realized or was concerned about the inconvenience that this caused(i.e. loss of AC and we were unable to make lunch). Specifically my 7 month pregnant wife was very uncomfortable in this situation and I felt that it put a damper on our vacation. When the staff did not answer the phone (we were just checking on the status of the power coming on as it was an hour after their estimated time and it was getting dark - we also received no help on where to find flashlights, candles, etc. other than to look around our unit - which there were none), I drove our golf cart over to the front desk. When nearby the front desk the golf cart lost power since we were unable to recharge it from our morning drive (b/c of the power being out for the previous 6 hours). I received no responsiveness from the staff when asked where the nearest plug would be or any offer of help to push the golf cart. Additionally, there was an exposed nail in the doorway to the bathroom in the master bedroom that cut my wife's foot. It is private, quiet, pristine, and perfect for family fun and relaxation. Although several units and amenities could use updating, that will not stop us from returning again and again. Our favorite activity? Searching for fossilized sharks teeth. We find on average 100 per day. We loved the on-site restaurant. Our boys went kayak fishing and had a great time. We also rented bicycles and had fun exploring the island. The beaches were clean; great for seashell hunting! Having the golf cart was great, and having two trips via the ferry back to the mainland included was also a great add-on, even though we didn't use them. We felt like we had left the country and were somewhere in the Caribbean. We would definitely go back again! But this particular unit really needs an update, as the furnture and fittings were old, and showing some wear and tear. And attention to detail such as water tap at the steps to the beach weren't working which meant we could not rinse our feet so had to leave sandy footwear in the porch. The first day of our stay was the beginning of a red tide bloom and the beaches were covered with dead fish. We weren't able to enjoy laying on the beach or swimming in the ocean. At the hottest part of the day, it was almost impossible to be outside because of the smell and we just shut ourselves inside our villa.I could tell the property management was dealing with the problem as best they could, but it was still a disappointment for a birthday celebration. We had a 7 day stay with granddaughter and her friend with a great view but mediocre accomodations and food. Reviewed by: A guest does not recommend this property. Stayed for 7 days in March, 2008 The view from the condo was great. The condo looked as if it had not been remodeled since it was built. The rugs were worn and the worn furniture and appliances were dated and not commencerate with the rate of $2,752.00 per week. We rented a condo on the beach at Siesta Key two weeks prviously that contained furniture and appliances of much higher quality and showing little wear. The food at the Rum Bay Restaurant was was fair but the pizzas where they had breakfast and rented golf carts were not good at all and had to throw half of them away. we ended up eating at Johhny Leverock's or at other restaurants off the island. Those that worked for Palm Island Resort were friendly and very helpful. As stated above the food and accomodations left a lot to be desired. We've been coming to Palm Island for years from various places in the US and now London, England. It's a great place for people who are very self-sufficient and don't require a lot of activities and socializing. Come with people who you love, to reconnect and spend time in a beautiful place. It's great for families - there are no cars on the island and you have to take a ferry to get there so it's very safe and you can let your kids run free. It's a place where you can be right on a beautiful, unspoiled beach - no hi-rises - just birds and dolphins. It's never crowded, not even Christmas week because there aren't that many condos available. And you don't have to rough it at all. You can stay in a modern, charmingly furnished condo with all the conveniences - washer/dryer, A/C, screened porch overlooking the ocean, even a blender. There's a tennis program and courts everywhere. There are gas grills so you can barbeque by the pool. There are flowers everywhere. You get around on beach bikes or golf carts. This is also great fun for kids. There's one restaurant/bar on the island, and another where the ferry drops you off on the mainland. It's also supposed to be one of the top shelling places in the world - very close to Sanibel as the crow flies but it takes a good 2 hours to get there - although I don't know why you'd want to go to Sanibel.
