From the beginning of the 1900s is has been one of the largest military ports in the Mediterranean. Augusta has its historical centre on an island where the Svevo castle overlooks the sea. The historical centre has a church and baroque buildings. You reach it via a Spanish bridge built in 1681 which, until recently, was the only access to the old town.
