Villa Meridiana is a fascinating house of about 200 square
meters (2,150 square feet) situated on a peak sheer above the sea. It can sleep
10 people. There is a terrace, a porch, a garden and it has an extensive
panorama of the sea and of Amalfi. You can reach the sea on foot. There are
four double bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a large sitting room and a kitchen.
The house is 1 km (half a mile) from the centre of Amalfi.
Villa Meridiana is built on a peak on the rocky coast,
situated between the road and the sea. It was built two hundred years ago. You
reach it by descending 95 steps from the level of the road.
After entering the gate, which is at road level, and descending the first flight
of steps, which are shaded by a pergola of Bougainvillea, you will see
immediately the white building of the house that emerges from the luxuriant
green of an orchard. The roof is made of high domes, which stand out, white and
bright, against the blue of the sea and sky.
As soon as your eyes feast on this place of natural beauty
you will realise that you have arrived in a magical place and you will ask
yourself if you are really here, if you are really going to take part in all
this beauty for the whole length of your holiday!
On the upper part of the white wall of the house there is
a sundial and underneath it there is a circle made of
majolica that represents the heavens using the signs of the zodiac.
The entry to the house is though an orange and mandarin
orchard full of parts of antique statues and other objects that were originally
found in the place.
In front of the house, facing towards the sea, there is a
white porch made of big arches and tiled in sky blue majolica. Violet flowers
of blooming Bougainvillea decorate the arches and frame the marvellous horizon
of blue sea.
When you look down, the sea seems near, so near that you
seem to catch the soft movements of the waves, on which the bright reflections
of the sun dances.
Under the porch there are benches and a large stone table
decorated in majolica, hand painted by local artists.
On the wall a large square piece of majolica represents The Milky Way and the
zodiacal constellation: it seems an invite you, on behalf of the person who
built and lived here more that two centuries ago, not to lose the opportunity to
enjoy, from this precise point, the unchanging and fascinating display of the
starry night on the sea.
The porch supports a large terrace, which runs in front of
the rooms on the first floor. Here, also, the terrace faces the sea and the sun
and is shaded by a pergola covered in a vigorous climber that grows up from the
garden below.
From the porch you enter, by way of two large glass doors, the sitting room on
the ground floor. In the middle of the room there is a large table with some
small armchairs. Along one wall there is a fireplace and along another there is
a piano. Large paintings and a television complete the furnishings. The floor
is made of glossy majolica painted by hand.
Next to the sitting room there is a large kitchen where an antique coal cooking
range made of ceramic and iron has been kept. The kitchen is equipped with four
gas rings, an oven and a fridge/freezer.
One of the double bedrooms is also found on the first floor. This room is “en
suite” with shower. It has a window that overlooks the garden and its position
keeps it cool in summer. However, there is a ceiling fan.
A lovely wooden and majolica stair leads you up to the upper floor. Here there
are three double bedrooms, all of which have balconies that give access to the
terrace and all are with sea view. Each of the rooms has its own bathroom two
of which are “en suite”. Each room has its own table and chairs placed on the
balcony. These three rooms have air conditioning.
In two of the rooms it is possible to add a single bed, therefore reaching the
maximum of ten sleeping places.
The house furnishings, though of an antique style, are comfortable and pleasing,
each room with its own splendid majolica floor.
You can enjoy a widespread panorama: on one side the coast with the populated
part of Amalfi, in front the sea and on the other side, the part of the coast
that goes towards the headland of Capo Conca.
Villa Meridiana is an annexe of a nearby hotel that is
open all year round. The guests of the house can use the services of the hotel,
which include a bar, organising of arrival and departure
transfers (on request) and book excursions to Capri, Pompeii, Sorrento, Napoli,
Mt. Vesuvius and Paestum.
The bus stop is at a short distance. The public SITA bus service links you via road to all the coastal towns and it
is easy to reach Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, Pompei, Ercolano, Paestum and the
Palace of Caserta.
From the quay in Amalfi you can catch a ferry or a small cruiser to visit the
islands of Capri and Ischia or the mainland towns of Positano, Sorrento and
Naples.
