Smith Mountain Lake Lake Getaways
Though Smith Mountain Lake is a permanent home to only 18,000 residents, the area is nearby Roanoke and Lynchburg, Virginia, which both boast over 70,000 people. These cities provide all of the metropolitan amenities you could ever need, from an exciting nightlife to upscale shopping and dining.
Smith Mountain Lake is a moderately deep lake, with a maximum depth of 250 feet near the dam (though depths of 150 feet are more common). The purity of the water in this area of the Blue Ridge Mountain is outstanding, and the temperature of the water is great for swimming May through September.
Smith Mountain Lake state park is on the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia. It offers a full range of water-related activities, environmental and recreational opportunities. Smith Mountain Lake State Park is a recreation haven offering hiking trails, 50 campsites, lake swimming, huge playground, pine-shaded picnic grove, new cabins, a visitor center and interpretive day and evening programs. Boat rentals are available as well and may be arranged through the park's reservation system. Summer visitors will find a fantastic swimming beach, bathhouse, picnic area, fabulous new playgrounds, handicapped accessible fishing pier and concession area. The park's trail system typically follows the lake allowing for beautiful lake vistas and bird watching. In the fall season, visitors are offered a lottery white-tailed deer hunt. Reservations for this deer hunt may be made through the park's reservation system as well. The three-season campground features nicely wooded campsites with electric and water hookups. However, the bathhouse facilities include non-flush toilets and a cold water shower. A camp store is available in the park office carrying limited camper necessities along with a few souvenirs such as walking sticks, T-shirts, etc.
