Phuket is a small island located just off the coast of Thailand's southern peninsula in the Indian Ocean. Known for its beaches and nightlife, Phuket was damaged by the 2004 tsunami disaster, but has since recovered and been rebuilt. The name of the island is pronounced something like "pook-get," but you don’t need to speak Thai to enjoy the great atmosphere of this southern Asian paradise.

Being very near the equator, Phuket is hot and humid year round. Technically, it is the largest island of Thailand, and is located in the Andaman Sea, a body of water to the southeast of the Bay of Bengal. Seventy percent of the island is covered by forest, but Phuket is best known for its beaches on the western coast and Phuket Town on the eastern coast. Historical attractions like the Wat Chalong Buddhist temple are plentiful and make for great day trips. Additionally, Phuket Fantasea is known as a "cultural theme park" and is heavily promoted for family fun.
